    Where to start?

    Hey guys,

I wanna get into rod building and I wanted some opinions from those more experienced. Would a starter kit like the Flex-Coat for 190 bucks be good? I wanna do a cheap blank to start...because I'm sure it won't be the neatest.

    A direction would be appreciated!

    rod building

See if Dale Clemens is still in business. I got alot of info/material/videos/etc years ago from them.
Cabelas has alot of rod building material also....or go to the Loomis site.

I would suggest a good book, then video, then practice on an old broken rod. It is not difficult once you see it done a few times, and is very rewarding.Good places to get materials, mudhole tackle and anglers workshop.

I built my first rod this year. It was a lot of fun and very rewarding. Here is a great site. http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/

I bought a real cheap blank on ebay $30 delivered. I then looked around and started picking out real expensive components and it quickly added up. So I came to my senses and purchase reasonable components for my first rod. PM me if you want a spread sheet that I used for my materials list.

I can also post pics of the wrapping station I built. I think you can see the mouse trap thread tensioner. I'm looking at my second build soon. Skip at Shu fly has some nice inexpensive blanks already splined.

    begining rod building

What I highly recommend that you get Tom Kirkman's book on rod building. This book shows you all you need to know to start rod building. I have read this book more than once and refer back to it from time to time, it really is that good. Afterwards, go to this site http://rodbuildingtutorials.com/ to learn a few more techinques. Also, subscribe to RodMaker magazine, you will not be disappointed. Then, visit the NERBs webpage (Northeat Rod Builders) and see what custom rod building is really supposed to look like. If you are ever in the NYC area, try to attend a NERBs gathering, it will blow you away.

    Good luck.

Zack- Check out Mudholes education clinic in Hartford Ct. on April 24-25th. Another option for supplies are found at http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/. I found this "EcoWrapper" station to be particularly interesting http://www.therodshop.biz/ecowrapper.htm
