Guess it depends where and when you catch them! Early and down low they fight like anything but crap. Also, I wouldn't compare a sea run version to a lake run version. Just my opinion.
Have caught them as early as possible, as far down as possible.....by the 100's........and they fight like crap! Just my opinion. They are pathetic once they leave the lake. In my opinion they don't even qualify as sportfish. Anything almost 4ft long that gets in the current will pull drag........a log, a shopping cart, or even a king.

Hmmm... I never had a log rip 100 yards of line from my spool while swimming upstream against a cranking current and a drag. Are they the greatest fighters in the world? No, there not. But "not even a sport fish" is rather harsh. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

well if the fight qualifies a fish to be "sporting", than why are walleye and LMB considered sportfish?

Channel cats and carp should definatly be included now!

It is great that you guys love your river (and I do enjoy fishing it as well), but to say it is the best fishery in the world is completely ridiculous in my opinion.

It is a completely man-made, artificial fishery. In my mind that completely removes it from any consideration from talk as one of the best.

Yes you can catch lots of fish, but give me one wild steelhead for 100 of our hatchery fish, particularly if that wild fish is caught on a dry fly. I understand that does mean anything to many of you, but it does for many serious steelheaders.

Yes you do not catch as many fish out west, but you need to realize that many of those runs are completely made up of wild fish. Stop the stocking on the salmon river and then we will see how good of a river it really is.

And while it is a beautiful river, from a scenery standpoint does not come close to the rivers in oregon (in my opinion).

Many western streams have hatchery runs and wild runs. Most wild runs of steelhead on the lower 48 are considered endangered / protected species.

Numbers wise, consistency and size of the average LO salmonid is one of the best in the world and therefore = world class fishery.
Well I know a little something, you won't ever know...

    gotta love the general discussion
ask an opinion question, and rather than respect the differing opinions people start bashing
how utterly silly we get in the off season

unless the whole idea is to start something and get people charging off topic

Craig I can't believe you say that about a FRESH KING or COHO. "fight like crap" "don't qualify as a sport fish" etc. Yeah some old ones come in easy but to say that about fresh ones all full of fight is ridiculous.

Some of these fish fight like bulls for 15 min to 30 min..all full of piss and vinegar ..as they say...then you lose them!. I see 10 - 15 year fishing vets....even guides gets schooled and snapped all the time.

Some of these fresh ones you simply cannot control at all..they will take you all the way up stream...or across or down or under rocks.

Hell I only land 1 out of every 4 or 5 salmon. Somedays less. I think most guys hear still lose 75% of their fish. If these fish were so "dead" how is this happening??

Are you telling me...that I am dreaming when I sit above the town pool or ballpark or staircase and watch 50 guys get schooled/spooled , BULLDOGGED, out muscled..etc all day long!

I already saw days where everyone was getting beaten up by the salmon!!!...I rem one day I was fishing near Carpy and a bunch of experienced...SC guys and everyone was losing fish I went 1 for 10...these fish had their way w/ us/me. And I was using 15 mainline and 12lb - 10 lb to 8 lb high quality floro leader(drag set perfectly).

Man I have to fish next to you ...so you can show me how to bring in these logs/ wet towels and show me how to go 10 for 10 like you.

JUst busting your balls but I am serious. I fished many places and ocean fishing too...Florida...new jersey ...MD..San Diego bay and SD ocean kelp beds. I think I know a good fight. I always thought fresh salmon fight great..in fact some of them are so strong ..they refuse to be caught.

What about these cohos you hook like they are methed out of their minds..... they take you up, over, under, out of the water, down, up again, sideways, then snap you?

Someone is crazy here either you or me. If not I have to fish next to you late sept / oct.

Troutpunk you say, "Yes you can catch lots of fish, but give me one wild steelhead for 100 of our hatchery fish"

Wow dude 100 for one wild fish???!!!. I personally, would rather 10 hatchery steel then one wild steel. Plus many steel are naturally reproducing now in the salmon river ...so technically they are wild...not native..just wild.

How much better can a "wild" one fight? I mean some 11 to 15 lbers take us 15 min to get in. I had a 18 lber once ..it literally took me 30 min to land. Maybe wild ones have a little more fight but some of these NOVember steels fight like mad!

I have been lucky enough fish both the SR and many streams out west and I have caught many wild and hatchery steelhead. There is no doubt that in almost all cases wild steelhead fight much harder than hatchery fish. With that being said, I believe that Salmon River steelhead are the exception to the rule. They fight as hard as most wild fish that I have caught, but not all. In my opinion the hardest fighting steelies and rainbows that I have caught come from the Yuba river in California. The steelies in the Yuba aren't big, but man are they strong.

i lose many fish in the SR so i can honestly say its good enough for me.ive only lost a handfull of fish in Vermont my whole life, none of which were trout or salmon.ontop of all that i may never get the chance to go out west or Alaska.I assume most people here haven't either, and reading a fishing magazine doesn't qualify an opinon on a river. Its like that old saying about the grass being greener.
