Three things for tying spey flies. Let's see. 1 - John Shewey's book SPEY FLIES AND DEE FLIES 2 - Alec Jackson hooks. They are expensive but look elegant. If you are going to go to the trouble of tying spey flies you should do everything to make them look classy. You will not lose many swinging. 3 - Small oval LAGARTUN tinsel for cross wraping the very fragile spey hackle. Lots of other materials needed, of course, but that's my pick for the top three. They are great fun to tie but not "quick and dirty". Keep at it.
Thanks very much for the responses. Being new (and I mean brand spanking new) to the whole spey culture, I was trying to build up a materials list for spey like flies. So, I asked the wrong question, got some great responses and I learned a little bit at the same time. Thanks Again!!!!
It doesn't COST anything to PAY attention!!!
Tying speys is basically like tying streamers for trout... Some of the same materials with the major exceptions being hook size and thread size. Don't let it overwhelm you. It is not rocket science, but be sure to understand how hairwings and non-hairwings act in the water, and be consistant. And be sure to practice your knots, for some flies are very specific in how they ride, and need to be vertical.
