    fly rod

my brother wants me to get him a fly rod for his birthday and he has narrowed it down to 3 different rods all that can be purchased and shipped for aroun $100. hes narrowed it down to the flextec xrd44 7/8wt, the lacross montanna series 7wt, and the wild water tech 2 in the 7wt. were wondering if any1 has used any of these rods and possible any other suggestions to throw in the mix. he's leaning to the wild water and the flextec more due to the lifetime warrenty. thanks for all the input.

I have no experience or opinion on any of these rods but wanted to point out a deal I saw last night.

Sage has discontinued their launch series. For an additional $30, you get a med/fast action Sage rod that was originally $250, and they too come with a lifetime warranty. You can't go wrong with Sage, they hold their value and have been around since 1981 or so and they are to stay.

I just got a Diamondback Americana 8 wt at Cortland Line store outlet in Cortland. (Take Homer exit) Paid $100 and imo it is well worth it. Very sensitive and really lightweight.

i have a wild water. its an ok rod. i find it too fast and stiff for steelhead fishing. infact i use that rod more now for surf fishing for stripers in jersey.

i'd agree with above posters and say its worth you extra few bucks to buy a quality rod like the low end sage launch or even a TFO professional series for a few bucks more.

your brother will be casting 1000+ times during 1 day out on the river and those rods are lighter and in the case of the WildWater, they are more sensitive also. you need sensitivity for steelheading, the more you feel the better you'll do.

spend a few extra bucks or even talk with your brother and offer to put up 100$ if he wants to pay the rest for a rod. he'll have this rod along time and if you buy cheap at first, he'll be buying again soon enough.

good luck and happy b'day to him

I would suggest a 10ft 8 wt. One of the most versatile rods in the world. I would also spend a little more $. Definitely go with a company that provides lifetime warranties.
Well I know a little something, you won't ever know...

Kudos to Cortland for providing affordable quality, and the no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. Great rods, made locally, for a great price!

i would go with the Okuma guide select 7 wt lifetime warranty. I have 2 okuma guide select rods and out of 11 fly rods when possible i use the okuma rods. buy them from troutlet.com if something goes wrong. they will bend over backwards to fix it.
