...for 9' single handed rods I use Rio DTF-8 with a variety of home made sink tips (T-8 & T-11 in 3', 5', 7') if necessary... also works just fine on 10' switch rods... I use this year-round regardless of salmon or steel... I don't need anything fancy since I spend most of my time up in Altmar area where there isn't much big water... for some kicks I'll use a 14' #9 Rio spey line, inter-changeable tips depending on flow, etc., but feel it's more than necessary for the SR...... Hopefully more folks will chime in that have better variety of gear experience than I... Best of luck...

"The fishermen wait and scheme and fuss with great singleness of purpose for a chance to grapple with one of the returning fish. They know, either from hearsay or experience, that hooking a steelhead is a little like hooking a lightning bolt, that the fight of their lives awaits them, and they look forward to it with a degree of anticipation and perseverance that is impossible for a nonangler to understand" - Steve Raymond, Steelhead Country

Get the discount/discontinued 333, or 444 WF lazer line for under 20 bucks. It works just fine, and if it's damaged, it's only 20 bucks.
I've had Steel take my line downstream and around jaged rocks before. No need to waste a $60 line.
