    How far behind the dipsy?

I'm sure this question has been asked before and I apologize for being redundant. My friend and I are relatively new to lake fishing. We got in the boat the other day with our new dipsy divers and realized we didn't know how far our plugs should be behind the diver. Anyone care to weigh in? Also the yellow plastic ring on one of the divers disappeared. Is the ring used for anything other than setting the depth? Should that have been in the water anyway?
    Thanks

Well im new too. there is alot to learn out there for sure lol.

I put my diver about the length of the rod from the flasher and fly rig. or spoon whatever it is. ya dont want it longer like i did my first year or its a real biotch to land a fish LOL! put the plastic ring i believe is needed and you can get replacements for them. Now i did learn during brown trout fishing it was better to use the slip divers.. and put the leader back farther.

i get most of my salmon on divers for some reason . maybe some guys do different but i love them.

    run your divers

never make the leader+lure more then you can get your net too. did that done that a few weeks ago lost the fish. 4-5 foot of leader should be fine plus your snubber off the diver. run a rubber snubber or you will regret it by the big hits they give it. run the ring on the diver to get deeper. on wire on a 2 setting it will be around 3 foot out to get 1 foot down. you can get replacement rings at local tackle shops for about 5 bucks for 4 of them. have a good metal rod holder to or they will rip them off your boat.
spey guy- hey good hook, its right in the mouth!

    Lightbulb long leader

    I never use a snubber-and I use a 10-12' leader -30#
when the fish gets close I hand line the fish to the net.
I also clip a release to the line so when the fish hits it has to pull hard to take the line off the release thus setting the hook-
I do better then average w/ my landing ratio-
everybody does things different i guess

No more than 10' behind the dipsy to flasher then a 27" lead from flasher to presentation. Without a flasher, 10 to 12 feet will suffice.

The ring will allow the diver to dive deeper, without it you need to compensate by letting out more line.

Snubbers are key when using todays low stretch lines on fierce hitting/running salmon....they are almost a must for salmon fishing!

I just realized this thread was from 2005!?!?!?

    haven't used a snubber since 2005-
and we've been doing well w/ 10-12' leads w/ our spinny fly combos the last few times out
