Was thinking of using a shock gum section attached to my flyline for steelhead. Would this be beneficial at all? Last weekend I had some strikes that were so violent that they broke off 8lb test in a blink. I was also thinking that this might help with fighting them as well. But, im afraid that a shock gum may interfere with sensitivity of being able to feel a take or not since i fish with a traditional fly rod setup?

I tried it about 10 years ago and did not care for it! I did not see any increase in landing fish, I think I actually lost more with it.... Just my 2 cents....

Don't see why you would need it either.
When are you breaking off? At the hook set? The initial run?
Depending on when it could be other variables.

Brittle line
Too much tension etc....

I tried it and hate it. I lost more fish cause you don't get the hook set and when you get stuck it usally breaks when trying to get un stuck.

Can someone explain to me what "Shock Gum" is?

Don't waste your money, bump up to 10 lb.

I've had no problem running 10lb flouro this year. Its been effective even in relatively clear water over heavily pressured fish. Go with the seaguar. Its my new favorite flouro. Never tried the "shock" leader, and I don't think I'll need to.....

I lost fish both fighting and at the initial hit. I was using the p-line CFX and Im not impressed with it at all. Maybe a heavier tippet may be the best solution. Ive been experimenting with different fluro and trying to find the best that doesnt break the bank. So far the Maxima is the bomb! Sounds like I need to save my money and forget the shock gum.

Airflo sightfree has been great for me. twice as much for the same price as other brands. Still not cheap though. around $12-15

The diameter is a little thinner than the maxima too. But the maxima is good as well.

Drennan floro rocks. It's about $13.00 for 50 meters. I use 3 and 5 pound with no problems. Maybe you need a rod with a softer action tip?

I use seagaur floru 6 & 8 lb test and find it to be very strong. Not that bad price wise, 200 yard spool for 15 bucks. The main thing with floru is to wet the knot before sinching it.
