When I get a hit because when I do, I usually am picking my nose, try pinning and picking at the same time:D :steelhead:

Dependson how the day is going. sometimes you are in a ''zone'' when you can almost predict the next fish, but most times its not like that.

I've never been able to pin point what exactly I do when I set the hook. It always seems to be a natural instinct more than a concious decision.

I don't think I'm surprised when I get a hit. I'm surprised when I am paying enough attention to set the hook after the hit!:D.

I have seen PSAC in action. He gets stuck on bottom and then proceeds to set the hook into a big rock or log. After lots of :censored: the line breaks. Then after more :censored: he ties on another fly and repeats. About twice per day during Steel season, PSAC actually hooks a fish. It s so rare, I belive thats what he meant be he dosen't actually know what he does. One time he actually began to :censored: when he noticed that he did indeed have a :fish: . Hope this clears that mystery up.

I made a pretty good cast this spring (for once) and the float went down and I landed a nice steelie. I almost expected the hit and was not surprised and I almost felt like I knew what I was doing.

I made another pretty good cast this fall and a big steelie beat me badly.

Usually it is a surprise :D

Floatflosser and I were talking about this one day on the creek, I wanted to see if anyone else does this. So you make that perfect cast, to that perfect lie, and you get a really really good drift in a fishy spot. The whole time ur watching ur float/indicator thinking "Bloop.....Bloop", "where is the fish"...."Bloop.....Bloop", just waiting for that hit that never comes. Then you make a crappy cast that falls 8 feet in front of you and while ur picking your line out of your vest your float drops. BTW, Bloop is the sound ur float makes when it drops hard.

I think I hate the line in the vest more than missing a fish. or a tangle..

I am usually thinking I am gonna get a hit, just gotta keep working at it. I try to concentrate all the time because you get just so many hits a day. I hate it when I mes one up!

Im not suprised. i actually visualize my fly drifting along the bottom at the perfect height and speed and visualize fish swimming over and taking it. Im more surprised when my fish senses are off and the fish didn't take my fly.

Sometimes i'm in the zone and can sometimes anticipate a hit (or it's pure councidence ;) ), although i've missed fish watching somebody else land one or zone out...turn around and don't see the float :( set the hook....miss

That always sucks!!

Yes, I am surprised even when I know the fish are there and hungry. It's a sensation I relish. I, too, cannot quite describe my reaction so well, but I think it's a slight uplift, a look to see if, indeed, a fish is on and an attempt to deceive that fish into not going bezerk. But sometimes the fish goes ape into orbit.

One of the best descriptions for catching these fish was posted on this site by somebody a while back. Paraphrasing...

Don't bull the fish in. Play it carefully, allowing it to surrender, and land it. Don't worry about killing it so much, just be conscious of fighting it too long, or overdoing the fight.

Other good advice posted by some, if you want to catch and release...

Dehook it at the side of the bank, but in the water. Don't handle it too much, but if you do, wet your hands. Use barbless hooks.

These simple rules seem to ensure more of those pleasant surprises.

Surprised when:

1: I botch the drift and get a take
2: Im thinking that there are no fish here....then have the rod nearly ripped outta my hands
3. Feel a "tink" or my line pauses..set the hook...OMG it WAS a fish!
4. Try a stupid looking fly I tied and they like it
5. Im always surprised! Thats why its so fun!
