Here's a two methods:
Try dissolving 1 heaping tbsp. of crystal Drano to 1 quart of water [add food colour, if desired] in a non-metallic bowl. Immerse loose river-water rinsed eggs in the solution. Gently stir occasionly, and periodically test an egg with the point of a hook until the desired consistency is reached. Rinse well with cool water and add scent [herring oil, anise, garlic, etc.] if desired. Store in fridge for up to a month.
Also, you can boil fresh eggs in salted water until opaque, rinse with cold water once the proper texture is achieved. Add colour and/or scent as desired. Keeps for a week or two in the fridge. Best done outside [on a camp stove. etc.], because otherwise your house will end up smelling like a salmon cannery.

mix one cup fruit fresh with 1 quart of water. stir well then add 3 tsp of fresh lemon juice. put eggs in mixture for 5 hours. take eggs out and rinse. This is the local secret cure. catches fish 10 to 1 over other methods.

i;m not sure how mine will do in the long term, but
i rinsed in well water, let them drain and dry for an hour, covered them in a mixture of borax and kool aide and the once they were the way i wanted them i put them in the freezer (the batch i thawed and used this week end worked well, they had been in the freeze about a month)

Fruit fresh is a fruit preservative you can buy at most of the larger supermarkets. I used the cure described earlier- boiling single eggs in salted water until they reached the consistency I desired, then froze them in zip-lock bags. Used them for the first time on an Erie trib this past weekend w/ success. I was impressed they worked as well as they did.
