I've fished the SR for 7-8 years and have caught my fair share of kings. But I've only caught 2 browns in that time and this year I'd love to target that species if possible. I usually fish the river in the 3rd week in Sept so I realize there typically aren't as many browns in the river at that point. This year I'll be there starting Mon (Oct 9th) so I'm hoping the late start might give me a better chance. Other than the timing, are there any more proven methods or locations to fishing for browns/steelhead as opposed to kings?
I'm not looking for trade secrets or anything, just wondering if a change in lure (usually fish imitation eggs or various flies) or technique might give me a slightly better chance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've caught plenty of browns on redworms, waxies, and single eggs. In my opinion, they tend to be tenative biters, and smaller baits are key for me....... Maybe its just where and how (floats) I'm fishing. I know they are notorious fish-eaters, so I can see how swinging streamers could be great for em......

Great thread, I was going to start a similar one this morning. Does anyone have experiance or thoughts on using surface flies like a mouse for the browns? or are they keyed in on eggs? Thanks

If you can see the salmon try to put your egg imitation just off the outside of the salmon this works great on the lower end of the river. Its tough to do without hooking the king but it works. You don't need to see the brown he's hiding just off the females eating her eggs.

This is the way to go. My crew used egg sacs and egg patterns (size 8 hook, the smaller the better) and nailed a good amount of browns last weekend. Colors such as pink, orange, yellow's, and chartruse or a combination thereof worked really well. Occasionally you may want to throw black or olive colored wooley boogers or stone fly's.
Like the previous posts fish the tail outs and slower moving waters below rapids. Brownies are concentrating on these areas to feed off salmon eggs.
Best of luck.

If your into fly fishing, last year I had my best brown season ever. I nailed quite a few browns on bright blue colored stone flies. The added bonus was a 15# skamania on the same blue stone flies.
Could have been the right flie on the right day.
