View Full Version : convincing my friends that salmon do bite!

How can I convince my friends that spawning salmon do bite? I usually travel to the Salmon River by myself four or five times a year. I mainly fish the tributaries where it seems that over 75% of the anglers there simply try to "snag" the fish. I, on the other hand, actually try to "fish" and entice bites. I would estimate that 3 out of every 5 fish I land is hooked legally. That being said, a couple of my friends are going up to SR with me for the first time. They have both been there before, and one of them swears up and down that the spawning salmon simply do not bite. Every time I call him and tell him how I did, he asks how many I "snagged" today..?
I guess what I'm getting at is that I do not want to fish with guys who see a fish and chase it up and down the stream trying to hook it any way they can. What can I do or say beforehand, and what should I do if they just start snagging fish?

First of all, I would suggest not even fishing smaller tribs where your buddies can harass the fish by chasing them around! If your fishing in a smaller trib chances are the fish are spookier anyway just because of the limited cover, you yourself might have a hard time getting them to bite. Secondly, fish that are hooked in the mouth are much much easier to land than a snagged fish. Even if ur buddies are hooking up more than you they may start changing their tactics by watching you fight and land more fair hooked fish. One more thing...I am from Ctown too so if you ever want someone to fish (not snag) with, PM me.

I was once an unbeliver also, but that was over 20 years ago, during my
first Salmon fishing experience in Michigan. As we became educated and more experinced,we learned how to make them bite or strike, but I'm still not sure
if they hit out of anger or frustration. But they will and do hit,if the presentation is correct, whether it is be flies, egg sac or lures.

Book a Driftboat trip with a Guide who plug fishes.. When a King smacks the rod over and your buddies can't the rod out of the holder, they will believe they bite.
Or
Fish the lower section's or the river where the fish are more likely to bite.

Tell your buddies about the Trout in the river. With the method they use they will not catch the trout. Trout fish and watch how many salmon they will catch. Keep the salmon, release the trout.
Catch + Release = the Grateful Head
