View Full Version : Getting away from crowds

I'm heading up to fish Thur. thru Sat. and I know it is going to be packed. Fished the SR last fall and had a blast. I felt like I was doing a pretty good job actually catching them. Every one was hooked in the mouth. The hole I was fishing was pretty full, but most of the guys were great. The only idiot was some guy across the river who was definitely lifting, and every time he hooked up he felt it necessary to make it known to the whole river, yelling and screaming the whole time. I know I should probably just walk the river and find my own spots away from the crowds, but I'd be very grateful if someone would fill me in some decent areas to fish away from the big crowds. Since I will be fishing with my dad and his friend, spots not to far from the well-known holes would be preferred. PM me if you'd like.
Tight lines and screaming drags!

Wow...that's a tuff one and I think that is part of the problem. If you are unwilling/able to walk a little to get away...could be tough. You might want to check the glass hole area...bit of a walk, but it is a 4 wheeler trail, so it makes it easier. Good luck!

Columbus day weekend is generally the most crowded on the river every year. So it will be difficult to get away from the crowds. Try between sportsmans and Pineville.
PaperMill has a lot of water between Clarks falls and the lower bend.
Anywhere you go is going to be jammed
Goodluck

i go up alot this time of year, but your not gonna get some honey hole near a well known hole, you have to do some walkin,, some days ill put 2-4 miles on,, to get away from people, i dont take a l unch break, but i eat a shore lunch stay all day, that way the crowds think out a little mid morning till early afternoon you can usually get set up pretty well, theni i fish till dark

I apologize if I made it seem like I don't want to walk, but since I'll be fishing with my dad and his friend, I don't want to completely abandon them. Guess I should bring a pair of hiking shoes instead of my neoprenes :D Thanks for the advice!

get a map and find areas above and below known holes. find out where the MASS of fish are and fish above or below it, not in it. good luck.

If you were fishing with me...NO, because I am a Fish Dog also, and have been known to do a few Marathons from time to time :D . Now if you were fishing with my buddy...Meh?? He may have a different opinion...he is a BIG fan of the afternoon nap. :faint:  :D

I would second these suggestions. You may also want to explore the water upstream of the compactor pool.

In faster water, are you still looking to bottom bounce, or is the technique that much different?
Away from the crowds?
I heard Cape Cod is nice this time of year ;)

If you are dead drifting flies/bait (not swinging flies) than yes, you still want to bounce bottom. In faster water and pocket water situations you need to manage your line a little more actively and as always, stay tuned into your drift.

I think I know which idiot you're talking about.
