This weekend while fishing the salmon river I saw what looked like grizzly bears. There were about 20 of them spread out in the shallow rapids. They stood there focused on the water in front of them. They never made a cast until they saw a fish and then they took there 6 foot rods with 30lb test loaded with cannon balls and would rip about 6 feet of line through the little pocket to snag the fish lying there. When they would miss, the grizzlies up stream would ready themselves for the salmon to appear. I even saw them running through the rapids chasing the salmon as it splashed up through the rapids. The last time I saw anything like that I was watching a documentary on Alaskan Grizzlies. I was found it extremely comical and actual laughed at the madness even though it was really :censored: me off.
Other than that it was a great weekend on the SR with fish to be had by all. Hope you all got to join in on the madness and see something that made you shake your head in disbelief or shear exhaustion.

When the water is lower they look like Herons - standing still in a riffle or pool just waiting for fish so they can stab em. Grizzlies? meh. More like a flock of Herons.

The area just before the 81 bridge, my buddy and I call "the Bears” for that particular reason. Here is a song I made up one day waiting in the DSR line to describe this beautiful act of nature…hope you enjoy!

Ever hear…When Johnny Comes Marching Home?

The bears are on the march again,
Hurrah, Hurrah,
There going to snag your fish my friend,
Hurrah, Hurrah

They’re throwing 50 lbs of lead
They don’t care if it’s snagged in the head,
And the bears go marching on.

The wont,
Stop till,
They have,
Some meat!

If anyone has ever fished the flats on North *****, release a fish right above the flats on a weekend. It's "Night of the Living Dead." It's especially dramatic when the sun is low. Sets the stage well.

Now that's a vivd image............Zombies in waders, vacant lifeless eyes staring out into the water, moaning when they don't rip into something, bellowing at the top of their lungs when they do.

This is hilarious. I am planning a trip to the river in a week, so I will get to see the show.

I've heard so much about the DEC hiding in the woods, one on every corner ect ect but I havent seen a single one this year. Why isnt there more DEC on patrol this time of year tranqualizing these bears and writing them tickets. You would think they would pull some guys from other sites to help patrol the river this time of year.

They're as understaffed as any organization, and with hunting seasons underway I'm sure they've got everyone they can muster in the field. Plus it seems they just don't care once they fill the quota just like for speeding tickets. Sure would be nice to see more crooks get ticketed.
