Curious what other people like to see in a report.
Area being fished
weather - cloudy, temp fronts
Water cond. - high, low, clarity, temp
effective colors
crowd size
funny/good story, though not neccessarily a play by play of the entire trip.
FISH PORN!!!!what else?
Keeping a running list:
Don't do a numbers count 10/92 or any crap like that * 2
patterns - if its a secret, say so. Otherwise list what worked
style of fishing - what worked AND what didn't work

I also look for patterns or approaches that were sucessfull. You don't want to give it all away but I wonder if someone tells me they are slaying them I think are they using Jigs or sacks? Info like that helps schmucks like me who are still learning...Thank-you by the way for all the info I've learned to date.

Anything that adds what they learned on that trip to help others. I also like to know general areas, and flies/ techniques used.

Everyone is really hot on the Lake reports now because the fish are very close and numbers mean they are coming in especially for those people that can't fish for them in the lake. The anticipation is building quickly now as you can see by the number who went up this past weekend trying to catch the start of the run. I guess last years early start has everyone all amped up.

:sorry: I prolly went a bit overboard there- reasonable sounding #s & guestimates are ok but when I here of outragous #s it really makes me wonder. If people are keeping track to the extent where they can come up w/ exact unbelievable amount then it's prolly 1 of a few things- They are full of it - they are fishing unethically :whip: -they are sitting in a hole w/ 6-12 fish in it all day and hooking the same few fish repeatedly- anyways -JMHO

I happen to agree, so I don't accept your apology - you didn't say anything wrong or untrue :) . But yeah estimates are okay - but still goes back to your point... what does it prove?

How many times have we bumped into "That Guy"!!! The same guy who comes walking down the path or whatever and instead of looking at the water they are searching for a familiar face. When they see you they immediatley come over not to greet you but to tell you "how many fish they have been catching!!!" They always seem to be catching them somewhere else. I always wonder If you were hammering them there then why the F are you here right now in my back pocket talking to me!?! Sorry, Just venting...

Back to the topic, I really enjoy a report with pics where the people are not standing in the picture. Take some with just the fish and some backround...honestly, some of the people take away from the natural beauty of the fish by making themselves the focus.

I love the fish p@rn!!
Depends on what type of fish is getting reported. I like conditions, ie. weather and water flow, clarity (Especially for steelhead fishing). Salmon fishing is different. All I really need to know is if they are in there and people are catching them.
Since I sling a fly, I like to know what patterns, colors and sizes are hot. This gives me a chance to tie up a few before I go out....
All in all, I enjoy the pics the most!!...As for having someone in the picture, I like it because it shows a better image of how big the fish is.

:D All I want to know is the GPS coordinates of the rock where they were standing when they caught the fish the fly they were using and...:D
Honestly - All I really need in a report is what part of the river the fish are in. DSR / middle / upper. Its also nice to know the water conditions.
As for #'s, I really dont care, its not important info once the season gets going, but I guess its good to know there are catchable #'s in the river during the early season.

I like to read about flies, techniques, general locations, like lower, middle, upper, so I can make a judgment as to where that might be the next day(s).
Pictures are good, as long as the fish isn't being held by its gills.. whether you keep the fish or not, that pose always just looks cruel. Show the fish some respect and photograph it in its best pose... I don't want to see a pic of a fish with blood dripping down its poor lifeless body.
In the begining of the season, Lake reports are good to hear, its kinda like a countdown.. they are in 80 feet, then 50 feet... now the estuary.. :P

A good report is not bragging about how great you did but knowing that you had a great time regardless of what anyone else thinks. If you can look yourself in the mirror and know it is the truth, more power to you.

I like looking at the pictures,,,the sight of kings and steelies adds to the rush of wish i was there when i'm not,,,location in giving and telling is cool keeps your mind working on where to go above middle or below..On what the hot bait was,,it doesn't bother me if someone doesnt say,,its a judgement call...thats why its called fishing,,,I went to a Al Linder seminar once at a sport show and he said,,,Use whatever bait/lure/fly you have the most confidence in and use it...>))>Ec

the best reports for me are the ones that give decent practical information.
The GPS coordinates would be nice, but i'm goin fishin!
The fisherman in the pics is good, because I don't get up as often as i'd like , I might pass by some of the "handles " i've read about. Fish porn is always great.
I'd like to see more pics of flies used.

All kidding aside anyone who does not keep accruate count of how many fish they catch, what patterns, baits, line test hooks used, line used and all that information is wasting valuable information that will take them from being a fisherman to being an angler.
I know what days I caught fish this year, what the flows are, water temps, appearent light and weather conditions, ect.
I have 20 years worth of logs that let me figure out that if x and x creek is running at 500 cubic feet, and it is november I want to fish it. Because a past log entry indicated that under similair conditions I caught 5 fish and lost 5, 3 fish on blue sacks and 7 fish on white sack.
3 fish landed on blue sacks and 2 on white is a big difference from 3 fish landed on blue sack and 7 fish hooked on white.
Numbers tell the whole story. Im glad you had a good trip, being out and getting skunked is better then being at home. But who wouldnt rather catch fish?
Did you every wonder why some people are the 10% that catchs fish? There isnt a place up north where you cant catch a steelhead(in season) if you look for them. With so many creeks between the black river and the genny. (A radius of a 1.5 hr drive) after a rain storm there is atleast one creek that has the right condition to have 5, 10, and even 30 fish days. Why not take the time to record and understand the data you collect, all it will do is make you a better fisherman.
Personally I am thrilled to see a report of....
I went 5 for 8 today in the upper river, 3 took globugs in chartruse early in the morning in the lfz, 1 took a worm in the barrel hole, and the rest took blue sacks between the school house and ellis. We fished other color sacks but no luck on them....
And I personally think its a load of crap to give a report and not provide a location. The purpose of a report should be to give fellow members an edge over non members when they go on trips. I respect the no trib names on this site, but not telling people you caught fish in the school house, barrel hole, cash money or other place where we can report is a load of crap. You dont want to tell people where you fish dont post a report.

But this isn't a "Members Only Site".. Lil said that SC had almost 2500 unique users and 300 members signed on yesterday alone. So by posting the location more non-members would benefit from it over members. Just my 2 cents..

i rarely get a chance to comment on your comments ditch BUT providing your location may end up in you not getting that spot back next time, especially if it isn't a popular one. in general, during salmon season. low, middle, or high works for me.

Well then whats the point of making a report. I had a good time and caught fish?
What are your going to tell somebody? I caught fish in the upper river on globugs? What good does that really do anybody? Compared to I caught fish at ellis on white glo bugs. That tells the reader something.
Every hole in every river is slightly different. Some are good with caddis patterns because of the structure, while others are better fished with white globugs in the fall because the hole is structured in a way that the old eggs wash in and collect there.
So it boils down to two things. First you give an acurate report of where you fished, when and how because you are more concerned about helping other people. Or you give a less then full disclosed report on your trip and bang on your chest just soft enough for people to know you caught fish but not loud enough to draw attention.
We should either help out our fellow fisherman or not. Giving a partial report is nothing more then a lie of ommission as the location and conditions are just as important as the results.
And before we hear the spoon feed crap, Its take more then what and where to catch fish. Take the where and when out of it and all a person has to do is worry about how.
We are here, at least I am, to learn and help others become a better fisherman and to further enjoy a sport that I love and love to share. Thats what gets my nuts off. I measure my life by how many people I can get into fish not how many I catch. Thats my drive and focus, if its not yours that ok.
And just because 2500 people visited this site yesterday doesnt mean that those people arent worth sharing with just because they didnt sign up and not post like the 466 members who joined and never posted, or the 925 of 1136 members that have less then 20 posts.
200 members with more then 20 posts is that the only people that matter?
How many members here joined to ask a question, or because they waqnted to pm, or respond to a member or a post???????
i rarely get a chance to comment on your comments ditch BUT providing your location may end up in you not getting that spot back next time, especially if it isn't a popular one. in general, during salmon season. low, middle, or high works for me.
If I was worried about that then I would never make a single post helping anybody out. With that kind of thinking and help, advice or education I give someone makes then a better fisherman and in doing so lessens my chance of catching fish because they are now in theory a better fisherman and thus more compettion.
How many times Have I offered to take you to the liegh and show you where the big fish are? How many other people would you tell once you learned to catch them? Then how many people would start fishing those sections? It all boils down to Im not selfish enough to want to worry about having things all to myself. I can catch steelhead in a puddle and I caught more this year then is fair for one person to remember.
You know what fish(fishes) I remember the most? The first fish Big Bears friend caught on a fly rods because I showed him how and where. Or the day I drug chaching out of bed and put him on a but load of droppies, or the first time I met Kal9wt and he thanked me for the the advice on picking out a pin, or maybe it is the PM's I get from people letting me know that where I suggested paided off.
I have met some great people by answering questionsand sharing information , including you.
And more to the point when the tric's came off how long did it take you to let me know it was happening? Why did you do that if you new I would fish it and take clients there to fish?

good reports,
any and all information given is helpful
and good stories and fish porn make them enjoyable
and those of us who need the help, really read those tidbits of information carefully and try them to make us better fishermen
its been said on here before, but the salmon river is not an easy river to learn
the flows change it, crowds change it, there are so many variables that all the information availible is helpful
