No need to guess....here is data from the fall of 2004.
This is a day by day tally of fish entering the river from 9/14-10/16. " To monitor adult migration, distribution, and timing in the Salmon River,
we installed a Simrad EY500 120 kHz split-beam hydroacoustic system at the Lighthouse Marina site, and recorded data continuously from September 6 until November 1, 2004. " Anything after 10/10 has a high probability to be BT's or Steelhead based on angler creel data.
About 43,000 Salmon Entered the river between 9/14 and 10/16 2004

That would give you a rough idea of the numbers but I wouldn't bet the farm that was the actual amount. If you had a large pod move through its not going to count everyone of them. It's pretty neat though that they have something like that.

With all due respect, just because this data does not reflect your personal, uneducated and inflated estimation does not give you grounds for skepticism.
This data comes from a collaboration of top aquatic Researchers from around the country working with the developers of the hydroacoustics technology to get as accurate a number as possible. The data was then run through a statistical analysis and compared with other collection methods conducted at the same time to determine its validity as well as accuracy.
This is not play time or Romper Room. These are scientists using cutting edge as well as tried and true research methods to study these fish and the natural process that dictate their movement.
You think that they don't realize that Salmon move in groups up the rive and that might be a factor in determining their numbers? Maybe you should e-mail them your revelation. mjconner@mailbox.syr.edu
Please give credit where credit is due for the hard work and dedication that goes into making the Salmon River the great fishery that it is. Put a face on the students, researchers and scientits that lose sleep over their projects before you go trashing the validity of their data.

Sorry if my last post came off a little harsh, but as a student who publishes research it hurts to see hard work and innovative studies cast aside like that

Never cast anything aside, I said that it's neat that they have things like this. I also am aware enough to realize that all research has variables.
I work with the biologist for Lake Champlain by giving him info for the trout and salmon program there. I was able to convince him(DEC) to stock another stream with steelhead and am currently trying to get them(DEC) to use it for salmon also. I have spent many hours walking this stream and explaining why it should work. It takes more than uneducated opinions to do that so I do have some clue. I have had alot of my conversations with him questioned, more like dismissed but I did not resort to insulting instead I got more info by spending time on the stream to have more info for the next conversation. Also some of my questions has made him have to work for answers also, which is good for the fish and the system.
Skepticism as you put it keeps people thinking and it has kept me working to prove my believes that this stream should be used for salmon also. To get them to stock those steelhead in there it took me a couple of years of my time for which I got nothing for other than trying to make a better fishery for those that use it and it has been a thankless effort. I have been another year and a half past that working on trying to get them to use salmon also in this stream. I am going to have to scout this stream and come up with numbers on how the steelhead are doing in order to get them to consider it. That was the thing that the biologist wants to know about so he can present the info to his co-workers. I will have to do that by fishing and catching some so that won't be so bad.
When I started taking a bigger intrest in the Champlain trout and salmon program steelhead were in jeporady of going by the wayside and the info I was able to give him may have kept that from happening. I did that by giving him facts and figures not uneducated opinions. They were not hearing anything about them so they did not think they were getting any returns and I gave them that info. There are those of us on here that do know something about the patterns of trout and salmon and how they use a system. I have spent alot of time researching myself to have this info to if anything improve my chances at tangling with these great fish. So relax no one is putting your efforts down, just questioned the information and hows it collected to keep you working and on your toes.

Thanks BU Drew for the info BUT life is to short to get your panties in a bunch over champlain fishers thought. i was thinking the same thing about large schools of salmon when I read your post.

BU Drew needs to get out and fish !! because hes got a board stuck somewhere it should not be!!! No studies are exact !!! there is alawys room for error!! and the best they can do is estimate the numbers!! 40-50K or 60 k theres a lot of fish for that river!!!! just my 5 cents!! LOL:cool:

Happy fishing, but stay involved with this kind of stuff because the more eyes and ears on the water the more info the researchers have to work with.
