Wondering how many fisherman fish BIG flies in fast water with an in your face presentation?
Been fishing the SR for years and I'm amazed at the number of people presenting nonfeeding salmon a little bait. The only way I've ever got a salmon in the river to bite is to tick him off.

The only way I fish for them.. As the Salmon see my flies coming :bigeek:...

Ditto. 3"-5" gaudy flies and the fish see them coming. I'm not fond of shooting into the flock or of those who do it.

sssshhhhhhh......we all know it's better to fish the deep slower pools that hold many more fish. I'm pretty new at this and even I know that.

I'd rather present an "offering" to one or two fish in hopes of them making the
decision to take it, than going for broke in a mess of them. It should be about
the challenge.

Good Call Griz, there is a tremendous amount of difference between being a fisherman and an angler.

I have to agree, its much more satisfying picking a lie and presenting your fly in the right manner to take solitary fish out of pocket water or runs.

Unfortunately I too will fall into a rut and hit pools where they are stacked. Without the advantage of time, its about catching fish for me and I take the most productive option most of the time.

I was refering to the practice of true fishing. The angler who carefully choses the right presentation, with the correct approach based on their ability to "read" the water and with consideration for others apply the necessary fishing pressure to be successfull. If that amounts to "100's of Fish" then good for you. An true angler is not just about "the fight" they love all the aspects. Make sense?

I still read the water when the conditions call for it but when 50 fish are 10 feet in front of you what does that make me? a fisherman or and angler? just wondering? Thanks for helping clear this up!:)

I understand what your tying to say, but i dont agree with that being the difference between an angler and a fishermen,, we are all different, its exciting for people to hook big salmon and lots of them.. now if your way is the right way,, then you are the man. i fish where ever there are fish, if i know there are a million fish stacked up in a pool that there isnt to many people at,, ill fish it till the sun goes down,, if the guy next to me is ripping away outof pure adrenilin, i walk up or down river and dont judge him,, yes its probably wrong, but im not the judge on that, im not out there taking notes on who is the proper fishermen,, next we will be judgeing on their equipment,, lets make fun of the guy who cant afford the proper rod for salmon and just went by,, these are big fish i better get big stuff!! I dont know i meet alot of snotty arse guys out there, (still doesnt outnumber the all around nice guys that are willin to talk) that dont think their shiiiit stinks cuz the do what they do an no one can tell them otherwise,, and they are better then others.

Let me start with a question. Is a guy standing over a run of 20 fish with a Gatorade container full of Skein dropping huge globs of it in front of stacked up fish and hauling them in on after another on 20lb braid a "Fisherman or an Angler"??? How about this...after I spend thirty minutes in a chair while someone scrapes away at my teeth and gums helping get them clean and then a person comes in and inspects the work for five minutes. Which on is the "Dental Hygentist" and which one is the "Dentist"? Same concept, one is more refined and more "aware".

They are two different jobs, i guess maybe if i go to salmon school and get taught by ANGLERS what to do and earn my degree.. so i was once a egg chumming scum bag looking for fish on my line, now im an intern angler,, now when i go to work,, i fish politicaly correct, but when i go home i might do some chumming,, but hey dont quit your day job,, doesnt make much sence. i see some of your points, but then again, you have no clue what that person has done or how he was raised or his values,, maybe the dude really wants to stock up his freezer with meat,, maybe he counts on food stamps too? there is alot that goes into it,, i live in pa,, they want trophy bucks,, and less doe,, which i dont disagree with,, but ya know what i get laid off, thouse one or two doe save me ALOT of money to feed me and my daughter,, and its a hell of alot cheaper then steak. the cost of one bullet and me liking to be in the woods,, hmm now if i was up in ny,, and lets say there arent as many deer, but a shhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit load of these fish that are gonna die in there swimming around,, and i get my resident lisence,, thats pretty cheap and its gonna save me a ton of money to feed my five kids,, now,, see there is way to much to put into it, i refuse to judge the person.

I fish the legal way. Does that make me an Angler or a Fisherman

I fish with small flies either bottom bouncing, indicator fishing, or more recently, using a Pin. Does that make me an Angler or a Fisherman

If I find a pod, will I hammer them...you bet ya! Does that make me an Angler or a Fisherman

I have learned to read water and find those "holes in a hole" better every year. Does that make me an Angler or a Fisherman

I have never been taught to swing large spey type flies. Does that make me an Angler or a Fisherman

I'll use a spinning rod from time-to-time, or I will go old school for a day and use my Ugly stick and a Martin filled with mono because that was what I was taught, and to be honest, it is fun as hell to go back to the roots every once in a while. Does that make me an Angler or a Fisherman

Not trying to start a pizzing match, but it just seems that the Angler vs. Fisherman or the "right presentation" is another elitist type argument.

Bottom line...what I do is LEGAL. I believe that makes me an Angler and/or a Fisherman, but if you want to debate that, go ahead.

Just me 2 cents,When I have a pod in front ,I like to see what streamers, stones they might hit ,if at all'' but sometimes you see that flash and Fish On.:) and thats what I dig,Like a new Gibson,Fender /.ETC ETC :D :D

Do what works but also do what you enjoy the most. I enjoy making the salmon make a decision by swinging a big flies in there face. Sometimes they ignore it but sooner or later they make the other decision which is to destroy the invader. Just have fun and respect the resource!

Hey Tioga, I completely agree with you. The question was asked and I answered. I love that this has created such a stirr. I started out as the person with the container of skein and now I try to be the guy who learns something everyday and try's to utilize new approach to continue to increase my success. I am as far a way from an elitist as it gets. However, I agree with Tempe and Wollybugger, It's got to be legal and ethical. I am happy to hear that you are one of the people who do utilize theese great fish for food. Unfortunatly I see so many people who don't. They abuse the privelage of having such a great resource available by "milking" or "stripping" theese fish streamside only to discard the half alive fish on the bank to die a slow death. It's that kind of crap that upsetts people like you and I. They show no respect for the environment they have been provided.

Tempe please see my response to Tioga. I'm not taking the I'm bette than anybody approach I feel that there is a conservation approach that an Angler brings with them each and every time they visit a stream. An angler strives to leave this place better then when they found it.

No offense taken on my part I was in a roundabout way trying to respond to the difference between those of us who practice the conservation aspects of fishing along with the sheer pleasure of having line scream of your spool. I also wish you the best of luck this season. Hope we bump into each other some time. Tight Lines...

Does a fisherman work for an angler / or vise versa an angler work for a fisherman??
Thanks GRIZ for pointing this out but I still don't get the analogy?? Sorry maybe I need the short bus version?? The dental one does not make sence in relation to the angler and fisheramn analogy! yeah I would be happy to work on some one with 100 cavities and it is ethical to do it same as timing the salmon run so thatyou cancatch 100 fish in a day!! HELP?? So because I am more aware I am a fisherman??

I'm sorry, I miss spoke, the difference between a Fisherman and an Angler is similar to the difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist. Scotty, since it seems that you have taken so much offense to my passing statement why don't you answer for all of us how you see yourself?
