Unfortunately, hope and prayer have nothing to do with it. Prices are set by commodity traders in New York where they have reamed us for the past two years. They have created a bull market in oil and gas based on fears of fires, floods hurricanes, possible supply disruptions due to war and terrorism, increased demand by China and India, voodoo and the stars and planets.

Other than a few days after Katrina the only real shortage is in our wallets!
Why is the price dropping now before the so called driving season is over? Traders getting out after no hurricane!!

They of course are loved and supported by the Oil co.s (finally the govt is investigating BP for price manipulation), and our "friends" in OPEC who take the oil out of the ground for $5.00 a barrel and hate our guts. This is worse than Enron! We are financing the commodity guys summer homes in the Hamptons (a lot of them made so much money they don't work the rest of the year anyway), the oil co.s record profits, the countries that produce murdering terrorists, and our own govt that taxes us 50-60 cents per gallon. Enough of a rant............go fishing as much as possible maybe gas will fall to 2.30 or 2.40 and that will make us happy that we are not getting screwed as badly as before.

That will sure make my 700+ mile drive up a little easier to digest. Pulaskinaut is right, the :censored: use any excuse to drive up prices but how come the prices dont fall as fast?

What can we do about it? Boycott the pumps? Hey Pulaskinaut, Im from Middletown, how about you?

Originally from Jersey, then Rockland for 25 years, then Central Valley now Monroe. It's getting too crowded and expensive.

Four years ago it dropped prior to November and then shot up again by January. November is election month. It will drop prior to election day and then return to the high prices by mid winter. They don't want you to think about the price of gas while voting. That's what what they did in the past several times. That's a fact!

The market has already been tested and unfortunately we the consumers have failed. They will continue to test the market by inching up the price until they see a decline in demand. From time to time they will back off and lower the price to make us feel better. Hard to believe that we are excited to see the price drop under 3 bucks a gallon. At this moment there is no shortage and it doesn't cost anymore money to get it to the consumer. It's all about rich people wanting to get richer.
Most of us haven't changed any of our driving habits, including me. I work at a company with over 150 employees and only two people are car pooling. I personally know 4 people who this summer bought BIG SUV's or king cab type trucks. "I need the space", I need to be able to tow my boat/camper". Truth is that Americans love to drive and love to drive in big vechicles
We'll save less, take less expensive shorter vacations, skip a dental visit, and make other scarifices. We'll all  but we'll all keep on trucking, including me.

great point pulaskinaut and 9wt. Oil execs, corporate traders, and politicians have no loyalty to working middle class americans, nor do they have an interest in the long term health of the national ecoonmy. What can we do?

I drive 160 miles every weekend to get to Pulaski. I either take the 99 Ford Explorer and ride in comfort and convenience or my 2005 civic, (40 mpg). With this choice in mind, I paid particular attention last year to the river parking lots. At least three quarters of the vehicles were either SUVs or large pick-ups. In addition, some guys travel longer distances, spend a few nights, eat out, etc, making the cost of a short fishing trip the equivalent of a family vacation or 4 seats at a Yankees game. (Maybe that's why the DSR figures you won't complain about an extra 5 bucks every year or two... can anyone please justify that one?)

I guess one positive aspect to take from this is that folks may care more passionately about the overall experience since it's becoming so costly. Hopefully it will lead to consideration among anglers, stream etiquette, MORE CONSISTENT ENFORCEMENT OF CONSERVATION LAW (hello DEC), and if it's not asking asking too much, releasing a few more fish.

And go the polls in November. Hold them accountable

I don't know if everyone has noticed but there is a trend to the gas manipulation. I have noticed it from day one. Lets say back when it reached $1.99, everyone started to complain. So after a while they lowered it back to $1.75. After a few months they raised it again to $2.30, and every one complained, so it went back down to $1.99, and every one said "wow gas for $1.99 this is cheap". A few months later gas was $2.60, and again people complained the government launched investiagtions. So they lowered the gas to $2.30, and every one said " wow gas for $2.30 this is cheap".

And the cycle continues every time the gas gets high we all complain about it, the government launches probes, so the price backs down and everyone thinks it is ok, and the complaining stops, the government stops their investigation. Once it is all quiet the price jumps up past where it was.

We are being trained to accept higher gas prices.

I did less traveling about this summer than normal, not because I could'nt afford the gas prices but because it ticked me off to pay that much for it. The only way to show that is to drive less thus buying less gas. If everyone did that for a few months gas prices would drop because other bussiness would be losing out also and then start to complain about lost revenue. Lost revenue is lost tax money for the goverment - see the circle.

$2.67 last night in Ramsey, NJ and they fill it for you. Near my home it is still $2.99 and you have to fill it yourself. New York taxes. Just great. Even the gas attendant couldn't believe how quickly prices have come down in the last week. You think we got screwed all summer?????
