Okay I ran into a great deal on all types of Salmon/Steelhead flies & Egg Sac tying stuff, but I have no idea what these two tools are for exactly. Anyone know ?

PS sorry for the crappy pic but it's from a camera phone...

They tools to help tying sacs easier. I don't think they are that easy to use. You can make real uniform sacs with them them though!

I recongnise the metal piece with the hole in the center.

You lay your net over the top and put the eggs into the hole then tie it closed. I guess its supposed to speed up the proccess. I saw this thing advertised somewhere.

As for the handle?? Maybe some type of whip finisher or knotting tool for the sack??

I prefer to use the "Spawnee" sack tying machine. I don't know if anyone carries them in NY, but I'd imagine they do. I bought mine from a bait shop in PA. When I put my mind to it (read, tie without drinking beer at the same time) I can average a little more than 1 per minute. Probably about 75 or 80 per hour.

I've used the sack tyer pictured. It is better than nothing, but I like the Spawnee better. Although maybe with a little practice both work equally well.

I haven't a clue what the other thing is that's pictured, never seen it before.

My guess on the handle is a hand held tying device. Rope goes around your wrist, sack over the hole on the other end. Put in eggs, push down, and tie off. never seen one though, so its just a guess. Wish I had that last year on the streams....

Brilliant !! This should make tying a bit easier - I'm sure everyone has had sacs open up on em right before they tied them closed.... That sure can be a pain in the a$$ / At least for the angler that doesn't do it everyday...

Cray - I actually grabbed some up at Fat Nancys the last time I was there for Steelies in the spring. I like that Spider thread - nice and sticky. I did learn the hard way at first by only finishing (wrapping the top to seal them) the sacs with a "one way wrap" instead of going one way - breaking it off then going the opposite way... That was a waste of about 50 sacs !! I didn't have any more with me on the river and I was rigging it by using 1/2 LB tippet and tying about a dozen knots on each sac... What a PAIN that was ! :yell:

Well, whatever it is, it has to be better than using sewing thread and a needle:p I once knew of a fisherman who admitted to tying sacks with this method.:D :censored:

Ditch -

I'll give it a shot (at least the little metal table thing) cuz right now I've only tied sacs a handful of times - so I guess I can try and see if I like it... I can see how it helps determine the size of the sacs (salmon/steel/trout) and that may help a bit.

the spider thread works well, but the atlas clear elastic is the same thing, and about half the price. just don't get the kind with a thread covering. As for finishing, I use a whip finish. Much easier (and quicker) than breaking off and going the other way.....

Look into any book on fly tying. A whip finish is how you tie off the thread after you've formed your head on the fly. They have tools to help you achieve this on flies but it can be done just as easily by hand. You would obviously just use the hand method for tying up sacs.

I use clear mono sewing thread equivalent to about 1/2lb test with 3 wraps and 2 half hitches. Hasn't failed yet and is super quick to tie. Very small knot also.
