Ok SC vets. I have a question on weighted flies, or more importantly the max weight allowed.
Ive been hitting the vise pretty hard the last week, and it never fails I always start tying whatever pops into my head. Well I tied a couple patterns using a 1/0 Mustad 90% Jig hook, tying barbell eyes to the bend in the hopes of making a jiglike streamer pattern to be cast with the fly rod. I remember that you may not use flies weighted heavier then 1/8 oz. in the fly zones ( and I'm not using anything nearly that heavy ) but what about the rest of the river? And is this method of weighting legal?
Thanks,
Eric

Well I know some of the guys here use a needle and bead to make small jigs. Im kinda going down that same path and was hoping for some input.
Eric
here is the way i read and understand the regulations
you are correct : in the fly zone 1/8 oz.weighted fly
anywhere else single hook with less than 1/2 " gap.
weight must not hang below the hook point.
no different than using a spoon(which is weighted) a jig head or sinking lure.
i have used 1/4oz gitzit jigs before with luck on steelhead.

The way I read it the 1/8 ounce added weight to artificial flies is the Maximum for all NY great lakes tribs. I could be wrong but here is a link to the regs (you'll need adobe to open, it's a .pdf file)
http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fishregs/fishregsgreatlk0406.pdf
The 1/8 ounce rule is also listed under the special regs section for the fly zone. But if you look under the regs for all the great lakes tribs on page two of the above link, it is listed there as well.
Also, measure the gap on the 1/0 hooks. They can't be more than 1/2 inch

Thanks guys. I will have to check the gap on the hook, the only reason I went that large is because they are the smallest jig hooks I have on hand, so they served the purpose to see if the tie would work.
Thanks again,
Eric
