I am fishing the Chemung River in Elmira NY this weekend. I have never targeted walleyes, but this weekend I would like to try. I will be shore fishing at night. I have spinning rods and will also be tossing out some flies with my flyrod.
I see pics of people with walleye on this site and was wondering if anyone could provide me some tips on catching these tasty fish. For example, what type of bait of hardware to use, what type of presentation and set up
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
On a side note, It is pretty kick @ss we got Al-zarqawi!!!!!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I always done well in the rivers for Walleye with just a plain old worm. Also Rapala's work really well. Black/silver or brown or rainbow trout patterns.
Good Luck

I am fishing the Chemung River in Elmira NY this weekend.
If you drive east on 17, you start getting to my childhood home waters. While I have not fished those waters in some time, and I can not speak for the direct Elmira area...about 10 mins east is the Lowman crossover bridge, good area for a mixed bag (Cats, Carp, eyes, others), if you travel another 10 mins to the Town of Chemung exit, the river is just to your right, park at the bridge and fish there, but just down stream is a honey hole skinny area with a fast water deep cut turn in the river, If I remember correctly, it is at the bottom end tip of an Island, just across from the entrance to the gravel company…;) ;)
Another very good area, is what I called cadidid (sp) curve. Chemung exit to 17c turn left, about 1-2 miles west you will see river very close to the mountain and road...;) ;)
As for Bait...I wasn't targeting eyes, Cats were the game, but always did a few on worms, and CUT BAIT (chub minnows are the best!;) ;) )

I'm a newbie to walleye as well and have been mulling over giving the eyes a shot on the susquehanna river down in the harrisburg area. I have always heard about and seen jigs producing well, but how are you guys fishing them? I know for smallies, i mostly drag them across the bottom or fish with a slow retrieve. do you guys agressively jig, dead drift, straight retreive for walleye? same question applies to fishing jigs tipped with worms and minnows.

Temp gave you some good locations. You can pretty much find them from the junction of the Cohocton all the way through. Most of my action came right in the town of Elmira as I grew up there, and in Chemung. Targeting the eyes what we used to get them on were 1/8 oz 3 inch power grubs in Chartruse and white being the best. As for the retrieve, it all depends on the mood of the fish. We would start out with just a straight retrive and if that was not producing we would start jigging. What also worked were perch colored Raps, if I remember right, size 9 and 11. A close second was silver and then the gold color but perch was by far the top producer.
If you are coming up this weekend, I hate to say it, but good luck!!! With all of the storms we got last week and the rain we got yesterday the river is high and MUDD!!! It isnt by any means unfishable but BE CAREFUL!!! So if you are still going to give it a try, try the big slow holes, and stay on shore. 2 good spots to try in high water are the big slow area out behind the pressware plnat in Corning and behind Dunn Field ball park in Elmira.
If I could get away I would show you a few spots, but we have family coming in from Texas and Im tied up this weekend. If you make the trip again let me know as I can try and get away for a few hours!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I am coming into town to visit some family and play some golf, so I figured I can get my wife out to do some fishing. She doesn't dare trample through the streams with me during steelhead season, so I figure this type of fishing would be fun for her. :whip:
I was also thinking of trying the area right by Golden Glow. I know me and my dad used to get dobsons from that area near the driving range when I was a little boy. I remember it is pretty easy access down there, but I am not too sure how the fishing is.
BTW, this site is by far the best out there, even when the SR is not fishing, people are quick to provide advise on other questions. :D Gotta love it!!:)

No prob man!!! I am familiar with the area, good for smallies. I personally have never gotten a walleye there but that dose not mean anything. As a matter of fact I only live up the road a couple miles from that spot.
Just a side note, the river is still mudd and it has been raining all afternoon. A lite rain but just enough to not let the water drop.
Durring the summer after the water drops it is a nice canoe ride and you can get some nice smallies in some of the bigger out of the way holes.
Like I said earlier let me know next time you are in the area!!!

Never fished the Chemung but Carpy did show me the holes you are talking about. I do fish the Susky alot here for eyes' and by the looks of the Chemung the styles should be close to the same. If you are fishing at night try rappy's, smithwicks, thunderstick etc... but use a VERY slow retrieve. You want to reel in so slow that you get bored bringing the lure back. If the water is high like floatfisher says it is now the fishing can be even better. If the current is strong enough to allow cast it out and reel in the slack and allow the current to work your lure in a slow arc. If you venture out when there is daylight try using bucktail jigs tipped with minnows. I like white jigswith medium shiners. mix up the retrieve but I have alot of luck with hard jigs. Alot of eyes' I get seem to come right after getting hung up on the bottom and when jerking hard to free it up I get a hit right after the jig lets loose and charges off the bottom. I also get them by giving the jig alot of small repetitive jigs alowwing the jig to simulate a feeding minnow on the bottom. Sometimes while fishing at night throwing a stickbait that rattles gives you an advantage. I get alot of eyes' slow retrieving/jigging rattletraps too. Good luck and let us know how you do!

As suggest earlier, part of a night crawler on your jig is a nice additive,or mix
it up with some ribbon leeches,IMHO.live bait and Ole' Marbel Eyes,go together :)
