There has been a couple tragedies on the Ausable river around my area in the past 3 days. We have been getting hammered with rain and the river is flowing really good. One of them involved 3 guys in blow up rafts that all got tipped over when going down through a fast moving chute into a big pool. 2 of the guys were able to make it out but the other was not so lucky. The rescue personal have been working for 3 days now to recover this poor fellows body and were still at the scene when I came into work tonight. I have fished this spot before and it is an extremely deep pool and it has a severe back swirling current in high water.
The other involved 3 guys in kayak's up around the Lake Placid area. They were traveling through a fast water section and flipped over, 2 made it to a small island and the last I knew they were still looking for the other guy.
Just thought I would share this to remind everyone that a good time can go bad in an instance. Those of you who par-take in these kinds of activaties be smart, be safe and most of all wear a life jacket and a helmet. I don't believe any of the guys in these tragedies were wearing life jackets.
