10) Never let Stonefly and Goatball out of your sight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They'll leave you waste deep in a river by yourself, stranded, to fend off the bears and drown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9) Never run up to a guide's window and throw lead at him even if it is a gift.

8) A shot line should never look like this:
(Float)------000---!@@##-----hook----!@#$----Branch-----...0000....poop....

7) All you can eat prime rib, big trucks, and icy pavements lead to broken a ss.

6) You don't get the name "Captain Colon" by having manners.

5) STEAK YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!

4) McDonald's parking lot is not the same as the the old Ames parking lot.

3) Farting in your waders sounds fun and warming until you bend over hours later.

2) Always pay at the DSR in change, Connie likes to roll quarters!

And the number 1 is............ GOAT BALL'S EGGS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing Psac also learned fishing with me -

When reaching the river have your rod rigged and ready to go because I only ask twice "who wants to go first (knowing that theres A fish in that pocket).. :D

What did I learn,

When floating down the river in a driftboat with other SC members behind you in another boat sound a horn to let rower know you have stopped..

I learned that no matter what you are doing there is almost certain to be a "friend" clicking away on their digital camera. Also learned that reathable waders can be nice and warm plus the walk is much more comfortable. I learned that holding Cray's hand crosing the water is important but might want to consider holding slayer's hand once in awhile too! lol...

ROTFLMFAO!!!!

What I learned:

#1. LMAO... Unless you're the lead boat, don't take your eyes off of the boat in front of you and your boat's intended path to stare at and compare pink worm sizes because the boat in front of you may drop anchor to fish a spot right where your boat is heading, and it will come up on you real, real quickly when you're not paying attention...:o LMAO!!!!

#2 That 2 huge "sh!t your pants power strokes" :bigeek: is the difference between a collision and a damn close near miss... LOL!!!

#3 Stonefly and Cray look really funny as hell with a "WTF??!!!!??" look on their faces!! :bigeek: :fear: LOL!!!

#4 Pick up a can of air horn for Stonefly at WalMart or tackle shop :D ...LMAO!!!

#5 There's nothing better than the fun times spent on the Salmon River...;)

In my first real steelhead season I learned....

Standing in 33 degree water in February is as addicting as any drug ever created...

Not catching fish makes you want to do it again that much more (see above).

The worst thing about not being able to feel your fingers is that it becomes a b#tch to retie...

Even though they are trout, like any other trout, they are much harder to catch...

A grilled hot dog and a labatt can be the greatest thing you've ever consumed after standing in the rain for 12 hours... Thanks goat ball AKA "the finest hot dog chef this side of the Mississippi"...

Most steelhead fishermen are absolute lunatics...

Pink worms taste like chicken... And steelhead seem to love them...

You can learn how to pick up chicks from very wise men while standing on the banks of the Salmon River. Thanks Snagger for showing me the way to a woman's heart... Hate to give up his secret... But... Women want a man who can belch loud enough to silence an entire restaurant. Thanks Snag, you are a true gentleman :worthy:

When you land a steelie on a centerpin and set the rod down, turn on the clicker... Or spend a half hour pulling apart a bird's nest...

I learned more on the day of the Seminar than I could ever remember...

The most important thing I learned in this steelhead season is this...

Everyone who is reading this or is a member of this site shares a common bond that many people just do not understand... I've met some real extraordinary characters and genuinely great people from this site. I've gained some new friends and learned more in a few months about fishing than I could ever hope to learn in years of trial and error. I'm even contemplating relocating to be closer to that fishery we call our home away from home... I owe this site a great deal. From pure entertainment from the warped minds that inhabit the shoutbox, to the wealth of fishing knowledge that resides in the forums... :worthy: Thanks for getting me hooked...

I could go on and on and on about what I've learned this winter/spring, but I'll end with this...

Do not give Craydaddy your email address, you WILL find some F-ed up things in your inbox if you do....

I also learned that there is a wealth of knowledge available from this site.

I also learned not to assume someones age:scared: ....sorry for adding a few years on to you Cray!!:bolt:

1) If your going to fish with slayer tell him you'll meet him at 5:00 am, but really meet him at 6:00 am.
2) if 100$bill tell you that he'll be at the launch first thing in morning but he goes out gets drunk and bangs a local he won't be there.
3) Never forget your lead on trout day because ny doesn't have any.
4) Never live your brown in the boat or stillreeling will take it home and eat it.
5) Turn off the shoutbox when trying to work
6) if slayer tells you to cross the river to get to a secret spot don't go that man is crazy!!!!!!!!

Watch out for the "Salmon River quicksand" that you sometimes find when walking from one spot to another (like from the Trestle South to the Snagging Hole). If you do step in it, have somebody help pull you out because if you try to get out yourself you'll only sink deeper. If you are alone and you get stuck it in...yell like hell:help:!

I learned how not to jump out of a driftboat in 750 at the barrel hole to chase a steelhead peeling line off of a centerpin.

I learned that I need to either fix that rip in my waders or buy new ones

I saw more river this year than in any of the previous 25yrs of fishing combined. Learned some new water and opened up more fishing options.

I learned that Psac cooks a great shore lunch and to never lose site of the person who drove you to a spot.

I learned a little bit more about centerpinning even though I still suck at it!

1. That if Toolie was not behind me under the long bridge I would have went for a serious cold swim.

2. I still can't land a steelie of any size on the pink worm.

3. Finman makes the BEST custom rods I have ever seen, and now I get to use one too!!!:D :D

4. My cell phone gets service in the DBI cause it would not stop ringing!!!

5. Craydaddy has a PINK HAIRDRYER!!!!

I learned what it's like to make very good friends in a very short time...but enough about the bar scene...

Seriously everyone I have met through SC and especially the guys I have been lucky enough to fish with have been great people and sportsmen. The past few years I have fished solo on the river and had a good time. Fishing with friends on river has lead to learning more of the river and various ways to fish it and having a great time doing so.

I look forward to another season with great anticiapation.

Hope to see you all in the fall.

Great topic Stone!

1. Most of you guys are odd, sick or just plain wacked!

2. Some of us are too quick to judge and hold a grudge - this we all must work on.

3. I found someone who likes to party as much as I do. Thanks Bear!

4. Most of you guys can fish better then I but, all of you need to ratchet up the partying!

5. If you want to find fish in the SR, follow Ditch.

6. If you want to follow Ditch, quit drinking at 2am. For you junior partyers.....don't drink at all!

7. If you want to party; hang with Jeff, Happy and Gman but chances are you will not be fishing in the AM.

8. It's not all about fishing and I could care less about how many fish you caught! Don't get me wrong. I like to see pretty fish and pictures; I don't care if you caught 10 or 20. I'ts how you fish and how you catch fish that interests me.

9. There is too much BS on the internet and we all owe it to ourselves to be honest, unbiased, supportive and friendly :) !

10. For me, fishing is about the camaraderie, stress relief and living life before it's over.

-route 13e to 69 to 49 and on to utica is way faster than 81 south to 90 east leaving the river.. which means more time to fish on sunday before having to haul it 300 miles back to boston. and that is important.

-good people make bad fishing tolerable

-centerpinning is deadly

-orvis flurocarbon is garbage

-5lb tippet + 2000 cfs + 10lb steelhead = orvis flurocarbon is garbage

-dont leave egg sacks in your girlfriends kitchen, she will not be happy with you in a matter of days

~ Falling down on SR rocks isn't as much fun at 49 as it was at 19.

~ Finally taking off the waders and guzzling that first ice cold beer is about as good as sex.

~ LMAO at all the stuff that goes on here at SC. Thanx Mods for accepting me into the family.

~ I will drown Cray someday.

~ Chances are there will be a PO Box set up for me at the DBI soon.

~Pink = GOOD....with everything. :D

I learned the following.
1. Its more fun to see my dad hook up / land a fish than myself.
2. Purple Exude eggs/ Jensen eggs kick but in the fall
3. Buy your Berkly 3' pink trout worms over the internet before you get to Pulaski. Everytime I went they were sold out. Pink worms rock in the Spring.
4. I give a lot of credit to this site. I've been fishing the Salmon River for about 12 years and the only people I have met were from the 1880 house were I stay. Now I meet a new brother everytime I go up. Lil- You developed a community
5. And I hope I don't get banned for this.. But get over the petty BS. Happy S. Barney and G-man, Rrainbows were great contributers to this site. Now Barney is no longer with us. Rest in Peace. I believe Gottums post should have been a sticky. The second day it was gone. I think things should have been handled differently. But they have their own site now that I am also a member along with a lot of other people from this site. I can speak my mind over there and not worry about offending anyone..
6. Ditch, Happy S, GMan, and Wooley65 are a pleasure to fish next to/ with. One thing I noticed that they are very happy when anyone hooks up. They are more than willing to rotate through a hole and/ or switch spots and readily share information. When we were fishing, Ditch asked Happy where the fish hang out in this spot. Happy answered and 2 casts later Ditch caught a brown.
7. I found out where the happy ROCK is
8. I added two more techniques to my Arsenal, Spey casting and Center Pinning
9. 2nd year in a row I did not get skunked on any day I spent fishing the SR. I guess I am starting to figure this thing out. Its all about reading water, and I think that is where I improved the most.
10. Linescreamer- I have bingers and beer for breakfeast. Movie Quote: My friends can handle their high
11. My favorite experience on the river this year was showing my buddy were to stand and where to cast. I did a sample cast out to show him and what do you know... Fish on.
12. Meet Shane (Gottum) this year, and my decsion to hire him was based directly on the feedback on this site.
13. Learned more than I thougt I did.]
14. Learned the wife does not like egg sacks and night crawlers in the fridge.

JeffL..Finally someone with enough balls to say it! I agree with you 110 percent on this one. I HATE censorship in any form. Just because someone has a different opinion on a subject does not make them a bad person. If you don't like what they are writing about then it's a very simple procedure..you just ingore it!! But not here.. on this site it seems everyone just edge's someone on to the point of making them bleed then get all bent out of shape when they don't follow the norm!! And like yourself it is exactly why i like the other site better. Besides i thought Freedom of Speech was in the Constitution?? Now to climb off my soap box..I learned
1. That Gottum is a FANTASTIC guide and person and he can FISH with me anytime i book him!
2. Asleep@thereel and HogHumper are a couple of great and dedicated fishermen!
3. That the fishing on the Salmon River is so much better then it was 15 years ago.
4. I learned that this will most likely be my last winter of fishing every few days on the Salmon River because this coming Tuesday i will be making a move to Tenneesse. I HATE winter!!
5. There really are some great people on here and wish everyone the best!!

And goat, tell your dog thanks for the entertainment as well... Tell him to give that pillow hell!!!

In response to the last few posts... What's so important about cursing on a fishing website...? We all want young people to join the sport, what better way to help them get into it than a forum like this? I think both of these sites have their respected place...

Griz104,
Keep in mind that this is a private forum, which is owned by a private entitity... that being myself.

Although uncensored conversation etc. is nice, maintaining a family friendly image is important to both myself and the mod team. Since I own and maintain the website, I have made the decision to keep this site lighthearted and semi-family friendly. It is a gathering place where we can share knowledge.

I have never asked for anything in return from any member of this site other than to try to maintain some sanity for the time, effort and money that I have put into it. I do ask that you respect the decisions that I have made to keep the site on track. I am not saying everyone has to agree with my decisions, just respect the ideals that the site strives for.

Now... lets get this thread back to topic... It is by far one of the best we have had in a long time. :D

I don't want to stir any pot.. But I know if I had a 12 or 13 year old son/daughter who loved to fish, I think it would be great if there was a place for them to go on-line where they could get quality info and great fishing stories from guys who know what they are doing. However, I would not want my child reading a bunch of filth in the meantime. Censorship has its place, and here things are pretty lenient if you ask me... BTW, the freedom of speech card does not apply here, get a copy of the US constitution and bill of rights...

I also learned this year that drift boats are a great way to see the river, and also offer a surprisingly comfortable and smooth ride...

Hiz- I edited my post about the cursing to make my point more accurate. Your right there really is no need for swearing, especially when you have young kids like Crazy egg reading the posts.

I agree with Lil, best thread in quite some time. Brings back a bunch of memories over the past season that were shared with a bunch of great guys that frequent this site and the river we all enjoy. Now if we can eliminate some of the politics & whining that goes on everybody can enjoy this site for the reason it was created. To be the BEST source for Salmon River fishing information. It has been great to personally meet several members, on the water, and at local tackle shops & restaurants that are part of this great community. Looking forward to more great times and meeting more members in the future. It won't be too long till everybody's favorite words are heard again. FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention the fun of the Summerfest to kick off the fall season.

I thought of a few more......

11. My feet get cold no matter what I do.

12. Don't pick a fight with Bellporker - you will go down!

13. Catmandu can tell some great SR stories :D .

14. Kathy's wings start calling me if I don't get a monthly fix!

15. Don't order the Garlic Fries at the Altmar Inn!

15. I met at least half of you and I would be proud to befriend and help you in any way possible.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for your posts!

1) If you walk away from a spot after fruitlessly flogging the water, JStreamside or TopGun will slide in behind you and catch fish with a drift or 2 - Hey Al remember "There's no fish in there, that guy just left"?

2)Cooking venison speedies at the clam bake makes you popular!:worthy:

3) I LOVE THIS PLACE (sounds like a country song I heard once.........)

4)Wading out to the barrel in january "the boys" get a little chilly, and if you do it alone when the water is up a little - you're friggin' crazy. There's a reason Toolie said he wouldn't do it without people with him.

5) The "Salmon River Goons" will never cease to amaze you with the blatant ripping that goes on

6) It's definitely more fun fishing with friends, than going it alone.

7) After a few beers and very little sleep, cooking with Beards247 and JStreamside is way more funny than the Blue Collar Comedy Tour - espescially when "The Waterboy" is on TV

I could go on and on, casue I learned so much that, in the 5 years I spent salmon fishing before, I didn't know that I could write a book. I met some really cool folks at the bake last year and made some good friends that, without this place, I would never have known. My hats off to ya Lil, you started something awesome and I thank you. I', looking forward to an even better year this time around!!

LIl.. This will be my last on this matter but honestly think that you and everyone else got my message wrong. Maybe it was to wordie.. What it boiled down to was that those who frequent this site has the CHOICE to either stir the pot or to ingore it completly! Many times i have saw something on here i did not agree with but i just ingored it completly. It seems that to many times that happens here. If everyone would have ingored Spiker he would have eventually quit.. But no they edged him on and he got the attention he was looking for. As for your decisions i totally respect them and you. It is quite a undertaking to run a site like this. I apoligize if you thought i was being dis-respectful in any way for it was not meant to be that way at all. But even you have to admit we each have the right to dis-agree.. Now back to fishing...

I also learned that no matter how you plan a trip up to the river it will SNOW! Being that it has been close to 15 years since i last fished up there i learned that size 12-14 hooks will catch steelhead. Also that you can not tie terminal tackle on with frozen fingers..

-frozen rod tips/line suck

-an eat in February makes your entire body warm all over, even if only for a little while

-'FISH ON' are the greatest words to speak

-getting an eat on something you tied makes it even sweeter, if thats possible

-tying flies 300 miles away from the river only makes you want it more

-and i know it was said on this topic previously, but 'Never leave fish to find fish' rings true no matter what the body of water or species you are after. just like the second you leave the spot you have been flogging for hours, someone will drop in and stick one in a matter of seconds.

-the best time to fish is whenever you can, the best place to fish is The Town Pool:D

I Learned...

0) Salmon Crazy Rocks. Nuff said.

1) JsStreamside can catch fish in a paperbag. without a hook. And he can fashion flies out of hippie hair, dryer lint, and safety pins.
2) Top Gun doesn't mind following a 100 yard sprinter with a net.
3) When SalmonFan isn't feeling it - he can't catch fish at fish farm.
4) You can float the river in a tin can
5) I get by with a little help from my friends...
6) There's entirely too much fishing information out there, so...

7) Shutup and fish.

I learned when Metalhead comes over my house MY KEG SEEMS TO GET KICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah blame it on me and your old man.

Crays most recent famous quote to me

" Can you give me and my old man a hand moving this hot tub, will only take like 20 minutes"

We were there for over three hours!!!! But had a good time every minute!!!

.Finally someone with enough balls to say it! I agree with you 110 percent on this one. I HATE censorship in any form. Just because someone has a different opinion on a subject does not make them a bad person. If you don't like what they are writing about then it's a very simple procedure..you just ingore it!!

Griz104,
Keep in mind that this is a private forum, which is owned by a private entitity... that being myself.

Although uncensored conversation etc. is nice, maintaining a family friendly image is important to both myself and the mod team. Since I own and maintain the website, I have made the decision to keep this site lighthearted and semi-family friendly.

Now... lets get this thread back to topic... It is by far one of the best we have had in a long time. :D

Sorry Lil but I need to say something about this.

As far as the bannings some people refered to. Well I am good friends with some of them, one of the bannings I was present in the shout box when it happened, the others I know their versions of the story. I can tell you that they got themselves banned because they chose to go past speaking their minds and went against the policies here. I know that they were told what was acceptable and what wasnt. I have spoke my mind strongly on more then one occasion, and ruffled feathers but I am still here. And that speaks to managment not banning people because opinions differ.

so that's what you learned this season? :focus:

I learned a few new stretches of a few new tribs, and how much seven & seven you can have before your next days fishing ability takes a major hit:crazy:

That if someone you see trying to snag fish asks you why you are catching them when they are not having any luck when there are fish in the pool, explain what you are doing and show them the rig you are using and how to present it to the fish. The smile on their face along with the comments when they finally catch a fish can be as rewarding as anything.

Dude spent years on the learning curve, you know by trail and error. The last few years it has come together through what I learned and from some advice from others, thank you guys and you know who you are. The first few years of going out there the believe that these fish could be enticed to grab at or bite something was unbelievable. Those people lost intrest and I spent a few years of expermenting only to hook up to few fish. They were however legitamate hookups, as few as that may have been but it felt more like real fishing. Thanks to the guys I have fished with the last couple years that helped me fine tune things and shown me some areas, salmoncrazy is the best place for fishing friends and info!!!!!!!!

HOW'S THAT !!!!!!

THANKS!!!

After losing quite a few fish during salmon season, I learned (on this website) not to use an improved clinch knot with florocarbon. I've used the eugene bend since and caught my first several steelhead on a fly! Thanks for the good info.

...that nice weather during mid-winter = no steel. Seemed like nothing would happen on those sunny days when it would get up towards 40 degrees, but if it was really lousy out and I was finding myself questioning the wisdom of fishing in those conditions, sure enough, there'd be fish...

Yeah, I was confused about that too. For some reason each time I was up in Jan and Feb, I hit the weather perfect - sunny, low 40s, and zip for fish. In November, December, and March, I fished in lightning, snow, and deep freeze, and managed to get into some fish each time. I have no clue on that, I just figure that's steelhead for ya... :help:
