I just got back from a few weeks of vacation in alabama. Spent a week I think it was in Gulf Shores alabama. What a cool, well hot actually, place. Got in a few days of surf fishing. I caught 5-6 flounder on white mr twisters, but the real fun was the lady fish i was catching. These fish were about 2" long and fought like crazy. They jump more than any steelhead any day, and peeled drag off better too. The best part it is I'd be casting for 10-15 minutes with no hits, then I'd get a hit and then it would be a fish on almost every cast for awhile. Also, was night fishing and catching a ton of catfish, mostly 10-12"ers but a couple that were maybe 2-3lbs. More annoying than anything. The guy fishing next to me got a couple small redfish, but all i got were the catfish. I guess the bluefish havent arrived yet, as I only talked to 1 guy who got one and said they were late this year. As were the pompano. Oh yeah, when night fishing and wading in the ocean watch out for frickin crabs. I had one of those suckers latch on to my toe and it wouldnt let go.
By far the coolest thing I saw at night were when the waves would break they would glow a greenish/blue color along the curl of the wave. Now i know i've done more than my fair share of partying, and I was positive it was some kind of flashback, I finally got the nerve to verify wether i'm going nuts or not and asked some people walking on the beach if they saw it too. Apparently this happens once a year or so and when its in full swing every wave glows like that. I still half think it was a flashback, but whatever, I saw it happen.
I was wading waste deep in water and had about 5-6 stingrays/skates/ whatever they were swim right by my feet. Then i was standing there casting and looking into a wave and saw about a 5' brownish shape swimming right at me, not sure what kind of shark it was, but it was a shark within about 20-30' and here I am in waste deep water. It turned off to the right though thank god, because I had been hooking way too many fish to move.
I also got to see my first wild alligator and armadillo which was really cool. Then i was in a state park in northern alabama and was walking the bank of joe wheeler state park and there were snakes all over, was told they were cottonmouths, but i cant confirm it. The weird thing is the snakes would be hanging from the branches of of lower lying trees and bushes, brown snakes they were.
I cant wait to get back down there. I went from 80 degree weather to cloudy and cold syracuse. I'm sunburnt and my ears are peeling and now i'm freezing. Unemployment is great!
