I was thinking on coming up in March , Or should I wait for April. Iwant to try tocatch my first steelhead I only have fished the Salmon river a couple of times in the fall. I am coming from south Jersey. I did read a thread about what was the best time of yearto go. This years wacky weather might make a difference. I also would like to say nice job with the Web site, you folks have a lot of information that has been useful. :)

April you will get more drop backs. March you'll get a combo of runners, spawners, and droppers. My suggestion... Watch the weather patterns.. I was going to go this weekend but Sat. is not supposed to be above 30. I looked at the 10 day forecast and the following Sat. is supposed to be upto 40 degrees.
Soo... I am going up then.
Dropbacks are more aggressive but are stressed out from spawning and do not have the weight (especially females) that they do while running and pre-spawn stages.
Basically fishing is good till mid May so come up when you can.
Hope this helps.

Actually I usually stay at 1880 house. 3.12 prime rib dinner. I talked with Linda last night.
I love that place. Heard Drift Boat INN is good. Also has bar and food right there.

weekdays are the best if you have that kind of schedule which I do for the most part. You can find areas and have them all to yourself. :woohoo: With the warmer weather comes more people.:( I do alright fishing in March. If there is a waming trend of a few days or more then take a ride cause ya never know. Trying to predicate the best time is impossible as that changes every year.
As Cray said once that river can and does skunk even the best of fisherman some days. Going to the SR can be like going to a casino - one roll could make your whole day with a fish of a lifetime. Thats what keeps me going for steel, cause your just not going to have the number days like with the salmon run.

Well LOOK OUT!!! 58 degrees out on Friday!!!!! :jawdrop: WoW
Also watch the river speed CFS. Anything faster than 1000 - 1200 cfs is pretty tought to get one in if you hook up. They can change the flow on you at any time usually at night so be careful. Don't know if you would be able to hire a guide but that is a great idea if you can afford it. 2 days of fishing first day with the guide and the next day you should have some techniques and spots to fish. Gottum (Shane) I think has some openings in March. I will be up there March 24th with him. He kicks ASX. Out!

On the SC.com home page under flow cast.
Also the USGS has sites all over the place that gives real time flow.
