Well i hope im not making a mistake i have a chance to fish this weekend. im taking a first time steelheader and im gonna really try to get him a fish,, and just relaxe. i was gonna head up to the SR,, this time of year,, on the weekends gets pretty crowded, and the weather is a tad worse. but i guess the bottom line is,, the oak is a little smaller, little easier to fish, but not as many fish,, im just trying to make it a tad easier then if he digs it maybe we will take a trip to the SR.. i hope im not blowing it here lol..

If i was taking someone up for the first time, I would take them to the oak as well for the same reasons you mentioned. keep in mind though that this year the oak hasn't been the most productive, so if you're looking for #'s, I think the better bet would be the salmon river. If not steelies, your friend could atleast get into some of the plentiful brown trout there this season. good luck!

yeah thats what im hoping, and im as happy and im sure he would be to catch some brownies,, so if the slower down stream water isnt frozen,, we will hit that hard with bobbers too after early first daylight hours at teh damn.. thats the plan lol,, i can make plans i just cant plan the outcome...

Good luck but if you get him to catch a steelie on his first trip you will ruin everything!! It took me almost a year to get my first one, and know most of my friends say the same thing. If he gets one on his first trip you might ruin him for life!! lol...

Boy isnt that the truth, I remember taking my brother for the first time. After about an hour he hooked up on a fish, I thought well time to mess with him since the biggest fish he ever caught was a Smallie. So starting asking him things like, who tied the hook on? Who tied the swivel? I could see he was getting excited as he had the biggest fish of his life on.. So was that 2lb test I gave you? Me laughing... Boy its a big fish he said.. They all feel like that I said. :D I finally started coaching him and I got a good look at it, HOLY CRAP I said   , he ask what? I said oh nothing.. A few minutes later he landed a 16 lb male Steelie.. :worthy: I said well there's your truck you might as well leave now and never come back because you'll probably never land another one that big. He hasn't been back since..:bolt:

for whatever my 2 cents are worth, i wouldn't bring a first time chromer to the oak. might as well fish in a puddle. what i mean is, regardless of catching fish, a first timer isn't going to learn the sport nearly as well as one might on the SR. the variety of water types and bottom structures, the lack of oversized blowhards claiming they own the river, the overall scenery on the river, the potential for very large fish, and the town itself all make the SR my choice. like i said though, just my 2 cents...

I totally see your point... and i agree totally... i just got a report back that the water is very low and clear, so im thinking we may take a trip to the SR.. im not the best at teh SR thats for sure,, but im sure thinking about it..But this time of year the Oak isnt that bad, you wouldnt catch me dead on the oak during october,, way to many people,, but this time of year you can still get alot of stream to yourself.
