If we are talkin about the same roscoe, I believe its in the heart of america's fly fishing beginings.... The willowemec, beaverkill, and such. The area has a long and storied history of fly fishing....
"Within an hours drive of Roscoe are seven (7) rivers: The Delaware, the East Branch of the Delaware, The West Branch of the Delaware, the Esopus, the Neversink, the Beaverkill and the Willowemoc. That makes about 1200 miles of trout streams with public access possible on every stream but not every mile"--taken from roscoeny.com
Lots of "traditional" trout fishing. Not the lake-run monsters, but darn good fishing none the less

Thought (and still considered by many) to be the "birthplace" of fly fishing in all of the U.S. Did I mention that my grandparents lived less than 40-minutes from most of those waters???...I never "knew" what a largemouth bass or panfish was until I was well into my teens. When my grandpa used to say "...c'mon, we're going fishin'..." it was usually the upper West Branch of the Delaware, the main stem or the East Branch. Man, I had it "hard" as a kid!!! LOL

I grew up 30 minutes from "trout town" As Keuka and Jstreamside explained, Roscoe claims to be the birth place of fly fishing. There is a pool named after Henry Wullf. I guess thats where the Royal Wulff fly orginated. There are several rivers, creeks and feeder tribs in the Roscoe area that have a good fishing. I think Roscoe is a bit over rated. Its primarily a put and take fishery. They stock the hell out of the waters every spring so that the boys from NYC can come up and play on the weekends. Truth be told, you can find great fishing 15 minutes from Roscoe in the Downsville area. The one cool thing about parts of the Beaverkill is that there is a no kill section that is open year round. Sorry no winter steelhead :(

Do you mean Lee Wulff?
Lee created the Wulff series of hairwing dries, but alas did not create the Royal Wulff. That fellow's name escapes me.

There were many "wulff" fly patterns out well before the "Royal" came in to being. Lee Wulff (Joan's husband) wanted a universal pattern in a dry that would be to trout what candy is to kid...irresistable.
And after great experimention and observation, he developed a dry wulff pattern fashioned after another famous fly...The Royal Coachman...hence the Royal Wulff was born. Did I mention he used it to catch Atlantic salmon in Canada...big Atlantics no less. And now you know...the rest of the story...night night!!! LOL
Or maybe Joan Wulff is just getting senile with old age...???...according to her and the senior instructor at her fly fishing school (who is also our TU chapter president) that's how that fly came into being. Awe, what the hell do I know anyhow...Toolie's got me tying the 20-second estaz patterns like a madman for when we go to Erie...so I can catch generic stocked chrome!!!

Good catch fly, yes it was Lee Wulff.
I was actually thinking of raising a little hell this April 1st opener in Roscoe. Think anyone would mind me running a float with my pin through some of the fabled pools?

My dad and I have a cabin by Cannonsville Reservoir, the beginning of the W. Branch of the Deleware. Great fishing all around in that area, and being only30 minutes away is a big plus!

And remember, the Roscoe Chamber of Commerce can call Roscoe whatever it wants. Nobody voted Roscoe Trout Town, USA. I heard the town stocks fish on top of the fish the state stocks to improve commerce. I think Pulaski could take a page out of Roscoe's book. I'm not saying that they should stock more, but Roscoe's economy appears to be doing a lot better than Pulaski's, although I don't know that for sure. The shop owners I've talked to in Roscoe say it's a tough season, but they manage to make it through by working really hard in the high season so that they can kind of coast through the winter.

Roscoe has one thing Pulaski doesnt though Willy, New York City $ supporting the fishery. But you are right though, if you are into catching stocked 9-12" liver pellet fed trout. Roscoe is your destination

Roscoe is the birthplace of american flyfishing. There is so much fishable water in that area you would go crazy trying to fish it all. If you think all it has is 12" stockies than you are missing out big time. I have caught trout up to 18" and I dont consider myself all that great of a fly fisherman. If you think you are good enuf give the delaware and west branch delaware a try for WILD trout over 20". All within a short drive of Roscoe.
I miss it all, as I now live in VA.

I spent over 25 years on the West Branch of the Delaware. Its not the same river you remember it Lost. Everytime the river floods the gravel and sediment gets displaced and the river bed rises. Holes that used be way over my head deep when I was younger are now only up my waist. The river bed has gotten wider and shallower. I will say this though. The smallmouth bass are flurishing with the river changes as well as the carp :( I think thier are some hidden gems as far as tribs that enter the West Branch. Problem is its all posted land

The upper part of the Big D ,from Deposit to Han**** holds some kicka$$ wild trout, alot in the 18"-22" range and some into double digit weights:eek: . These fishy's will take you into your backing.
Ive flyfished @ the West Branch Anglers Fishing Resort several times and the place is great, 5 stars for that place in every category.
A great place to go is the fly fishing museum ,I met Joan Wolf there several years ago , had a little chat with her,,not knowing who she was at that time,,great lady..A year later i went to one of her seminars in Morristown ,NJ. It was well worth the time and $$ to get educated by her and stories about her late husband Lee Wolf the Master of Fly Fishing,,imagine tying a size 28 fly with your fingers.. Lee Wolf did >))>

I believe the rewards would far out weigh the risk!:D
Steelheader, I saw a documentary on Lee Wulff a few years back. Guy was absolutely amazing the way he tied all his flies w/o a vise!

"He fought a several hundred pound Pacific blue marlin on a fly rod for an hour and a half off Golfito, Costa Rica at age 85. The next day he hooked a potential world record Pacific sailfish and fought it for six hours before the hook pulled out."
I wrote a thesis in college about this man's life... Anyone who can handle a fish like that at 85 is a real man:eek: :worthy: . Also, he was directly involved in making catch & release an acceptable and noble practice in the fishing world.:worthy: :worthy:

Is that why people say the Strippers run up that far? They are eating the trout right?

 Funny how one letter can completely change the meaning of something!!LMFAO!!! how true
I do know the shad and the herring run up that far and the trout are unlucky cuz the stripers are not that picky,, the strippers on the otherhand dont eat much trout,, but they know what bait to get me in,, some good smelling fuzzy lap flounder does it every time..

I fish up near margarettsville on the east branch of the deleware just about every year close to April 1, and from what I see in the locals, ain't no way strippers up there bring in NYC cash.

It's funny how one letter can change the focus of a thread from praise of a trout fishery and fly fishing pioneer to the quality of exotic dancers in a rural area!!! :focus:
Very true, Hizzy! That thesis you did, was it for your masters? If so, what's your degree in that allowed you to do a thesis on someone like Lee Wulff. Just wondering because I'm finishing up my master's degree and need to come up with something for my thesis.

No, I don't have a masters... It was more of a Bulls**t thesis to promote good writing skills among engineers. I argued that without the promotion of catch & release by Lee Wulff, our fisheries today would be struggling even more than they already are... It may not have been the greatest argument to present in the world, but hey, I got to write a college thesis paper about fishing :D...

That's funny!!! I live on the Pepacton on the East Branch in Andes. There's no local girl going to make any money doing that. Got teeth???? Fishing and huntings great here. Plus the Hudson for stripers, and Upstate for Big fish. I would never live any where else. But maybe the Adirondacks, the downstaters found us, getting very overrun. Brian
P.S. Finally found some thing to post!

looking for god's country??? pristine waters??? In the northeast US??? head for northern maine... you can feel like the only human in a 1000 mile radius up there while casting a fly to monster brookies and decent atlantics... of course, the guy standing 50 yards downstream feels the same way too... But trust me, hit the runs/hatches right and it may be the wilderness fishing trip of a lifetime... A 40-50 mile drive on a logging road is a pretty long ride... And if your feet aren't frozen to the inside of your waders in May, you may be too late.;) Plenty of quality guides up there too...

Maine sounds great got plenty of fresh and salt water and big woods. But alas, I was cursed with a talent. I work with my hands, an electrician by trade. No people, no customers. GOD, why couldn't I be born rich or some thing.Brian
