Just watched Fly Fishing America on OLN between long hours of fly tying sessions. It was about Joe Humphries taking on huge browns in Arkansas.....AT NIGHT!!! Man-o-man did that show get me just counting the days until it warms enough to do some nocturnal troutin' again!!! Fishing chrome is great and so is salmon, but trout fly fishing at night is still my all-time favorite!!!

Soon, my master, the jed-eye will take to the delaware waters, trout slayer in hand to do honorable battle with the brown behemoths that dwell within.........

There is nothing spookier than having a mink run across your bootfoot while bats swoop around in the moonlight. Except perhaps when a deer sneaks up behind you while you are sitting resting a pool and snorts a few feet from your ear! I loves da nite fishin!!

For a real pant-crapper.....try fly or spin fishing for Northerns and Muskies
at night too. Especially when they hit right at the boat......
 :jawdrop: :scared: :bigeek: :faint:

I plan to try some of this night-brownin' this spring. Only gone for bullhead at night. Like reeling in a lead weight!
I look forward to fishing the Deleware this spring, gotta love new water...:o

You oughtta try night bullhead fishing at the Oneonta Reservoir, go for fish but catch BIG snapping turtles.:fear: They get quite sizable up there, and are very aggressive - a worm on the bottom at night is equally appealing to them and fish.

Hey Griz,
Speaking of hitting right at the boat...try sharking at night and having a 300 to 400 pound mako or thresher jump 15 feet up about 10 feet off the stern. HOLY S**T, is it going to land in the water...or in the boat with me???? I had a thresher do that, scared me so bad, I dove head first into the cabin. Fortunately, it landed in the water, it's tail slapped the side of the boat going back in. LMAO now though.

That's funny, that where I go...those darn snappers scare the crap out of us, come right up to our feet, bats swooping, something in the woods, the batteries just died in the flashlight...why does this 8 in. twig make me feel safe....who knows...
Have gone to the Susquehanna as well, got yellow bullhead there, but not nearly as many.
If you ever need a buddy, Oneonta isn't far from me;)

Hey SalmonFan,
Have you heard of trout in the resevoir? Some one said they caught them there, but I said show me the pics. I know the stream that flows out has nice brookies in it.

...fly fishing along in the dark (had the wife with me even). Fish are cooperating nicely for the first hour or so, then they just quit??? What the...???...keep fishin' along and soon I here this funny sound right in front of my feet :fear: !!! Slowly reach for the flashlight (and a big rock)...shine the light down and standing on its hind legs is...a beaver kit about 10-inches tall!!! Goofiest thing I ever saw!!!
But...the thing that scared me the most was a 4-ft timber rattler I nearly stepped on one evening going down to get set-up early one night!!! I know they taste like chicken but....:bolt: :faint: ....that was more than close enough for me brudda'!!!
Some of the cool "surprises" have been tailing a 30" (fly caught) walleye for a friend right after we'd been hammering the trout on caddis no less. And then there was the 18-lb striper at 3 a.m. that I thought was the biggest brownie I'd ever tangled with...on a 9-ft 5-wt rod no less and a #10 wet fly!!! Aye karumba!!!...

There's no doubt what you described is about as wicked-scary as it gets!!
If it becomes possible that YOU become the bait (or food) that just ain't right!!! LOL!!!

Too funny Jstreamside, I was watching the same show with you last night. Its hard to imagine the state of Arkansas being the hotbed for monster browns

If you build it they will come! A deep water release tailwater that is. Stock it and they will grow large.
Also pretty eerie wading out into LO night swinging streamers in April for a mix of drop back steel, gorging browns, 30 pound carp and the occasional spring king. What was that making a splash like someone threw a concrete block near you? One of those fish, a merganser or cormorant you just scared or maybe those LO sturgen rumored to be the reason so many bodies are never found really does exist.

Last June me and two buddies were fishing the Green Drake/Coffin Fly hatch on our favorite section of the Deleware. Fish were being very cooperative, several wrist jarring takes on both duns and spinners as darkness fell. One of the guys starts screaming for us to come down to where he was fishing, he's way into his backing(thank God for 3X). He fights this fish for 40+ minutes, turns out to be a Striper just shy of 36" with a green drake comparadun hanging out the corner of his mouth.

Yeah, guys I've heard of a few being caught but never seen any myself, but you're right that stream is well known for producing brookies, heck it flows right by the high school. But as for the Res. it's mostly bass, pickerel that I catch. I like walleye fishing in the suquehanna at night, but you still get the occasional turtle, and even the rare hellbender!!!
Was fishing the Dyberry several years ago at night. Had a black bear come walking down on the other side of the creek right across from me! Talk about a pants-crapper!!

Yeah, a guy I know put walleye in the Resevoir, so they are there too! Haven't hooked into a hellbender yet, like a mud puppy right?

A Giant mud-puppy - can get up to 3 ft long. The one I caught was about 16-18 inches - mouth just like a bullhead!!! Susquehannah has a few that I've seen. One was dangling on the end of some jack-offs knife:yell:  dumb idiot thought it was a baby alligator (talk about redneck - I'm not kidding what a MORON!!!) and he got freaked and stabbed it through the head.

That reminds me of last Sept. when we were fishing on ***** creek. One of the local old dogs was wandering around. Big old black dog, real friendly. Well he came strolling up the creek and a guy was fishing that side and his buddy was fishing our side. The guy's buddy saw the dog coming and must have seen hid buddy not paying attention to it and yelled... "Look out here comes a bear!!!!" Funniest thing I ever saw watching that guys face as he turned around. He almost jumped in the water, that might have ruined the funny part but he collected himself just before taking the plunge and realized it was only a dog. I think he left shortly afterwards to go change his pants lol...

Fished the local LO piers at night for years with glow in the dark cleos. Very effective on browns in the spring and kings in the fall.
