I have just recently found this site and was impressed with the amount of knowledge that I found here. I am planning at trip up to the SR the 25th-28th or March. I like to fly fish and would like some advice on patterns and size flys at that time of year. Maybe some easy patterns to tie. I am a better fly-fisher then I am fly tyer. Any help would be welcome.

instead of me typing , you should go to the Beginner's Forum and Fly Tying Forum and look at the sticky threads about Steelhead Patterns. They have many great patterns and tutorials that give step by step instructions on the most successful flies used for Steelhead.
Good Luck to You.

Gman,
Thanks for your response. Lots of great info in that section. I'm just trying to narrow things down a little. I don't have much experience steelheading and would like to know what flies would likely be productive the end of March, and some idea of size. I believe that late in the season the fly size should be smaller? Once I get a handle on whats happening at that time of year I'll get the specifics from the beginer section.

There is alot of small blackstone flies around then 12-16 ish, a few steelhead spawning, and lots of little salmon around, if you want to throw small streamers

Flyman, I discovered this site a little over a year ago when I was introduced to the salmon river last november by a friend. I started tying flies about one week after my first steelhead trip. You would be amazed how quickly you can learn to tie them. Stoneflies are great to learn on. Just go and search online as there are many sites dedicated to tying flies. They show you step by step with pictures. Print them out and keep them in a binder. I cant believe I passed on my friends invitations year after year to try this type of fishing. It is an amazing fishery. Since last november, I have made over 10 trips to the salmon river (276 miles) and am thankful to all the members on this site. The collective knowledge here is awesome.
