I also might be up there for my first ever salmon river steelhead trip. I will have a red marabou fly stuck in my hat if anyone wants to lend a helping hand or advice.

Dress warm.... Get up early and fish hard all day long. Are you fly fishing?

Where is DSR? What do all of you think about the black hole? We will be there before sunrise, and will fish until sunset...then repeat Monday. This is our first trip for steelies...any pointers on where to fish?
Thanks

I'd fish the DSR, but I would get a nice, big Fatboy Breakfast before doing so. If you insist on doing the warrior thing, that's cool too, but usually come december and water temps in the 30's the fish often don't really start moving until late morning/noon. Save your energy and fish hard when the time is right. but, hey, that's my opinion.

Yes I am fly-fishing, planning on using a 7wt, and bringing int and floating setup. Mostly spawn, meth, stones, and the like. I am also bring some of cray's specialties just in case.

Just go to the lower fly section, and get you first steelie. Go to the cemetaty hole and walk up to the twin tree (on hill side) walk out 15 ft to the bar and then south 20 ft. and your into steel..... Indy fish with chart. globugs in the am and white after the sun come up a couple feet

It is the best.:D
you're not going to see much in the way of chrome too far above the DSR this time of year.

Sure, you can fish the LFZ, after those fish have been horrorized thru the whole river and are black as coal.

I'll pay my 10 bucks:)

First time up I'd seriously think about putting in some time at the lower fly zone to start. They aren't freshi fish just in from the lake, but you won't find a greater concentration of steelies anywhere on the river. If you hook and land one, get your photo, then do some exploring. Try to hook up with one of the salmon crazy brethren to show you the ropes. Getting on your spot at sunrise is not key as the fishing doesn't really turn on, till it warms up a little. Good luck!

Caught my first steel today, went out with a SC brethren who put me on fish. Roads turned to $hit between Cortland and Binghamton so it was hard to dream about noodle rods and such after realizing that a fly-rod may not be the most effective tool for those steelies.

Thanks for the help guys, we had alot of luck today!
Caught alot of steal, a good size brown, and beautiful BIG rainbow or steel...not sure. And of course the usual monster sucker had to bite once for each of us. Great day, we were gonna stay til monday but the day was good to us, and we were happy! Released all of them after photos so they can continue to make people smile...

1)move another 3 feet to the right,
2)reach into left pocket, insert shells into 12 gauge shotgun,
3)lock & load,
4)point barrel at 45 degree angle toward water, (remember 48" rule end of barrel to water),
5) pull trigger..

You now are the proud owner of about 15 bloody, darkened Steelhead.:bolt:

That's what I thought. Usually if I go full, I only manage a half dozen or so steelies. More if they are small though.:D :D
