Heavy Fire.....

Everyone is willing to help, no one wants to post the specific names of small tribs. We want to protect the resource. Try PM'ing some guys. It works better than you might think.

It is a site to help people out and small trib info can be exchanged through PM'S, not in the fourm. Just ask if anyone would be willing to PM you the info. There was a big discussion on this already and it is a posting rule that smaller tribs not be posted by name and location in the fourm, to many eyes see it. The smaller tribs get raped and pilliaged enough already and thats why it is such a touchy subject and you are not the first to not get an answer to a question such as yours in the fourm.

there's really nothing that can be done about the tribs getting pounded. My reaction was a knee jerk response. Yes, you might get some info by PM's but, in my opinion, that kind of info just shouldn't be tossed around even "privately"

My reasonining is this, if I haven't met you in person, I don't know who you are, and who you might tell, if I give you info on a small trib. basically, I don't think it's fair for someone to just hop on a board and start firing off PM's asking for info to small tribs, let alone on a public forum. There are plenty of us here who can help you learn to find these places for youself, instead of just handing over info that some of us have taken many seasons to learn.

Try finding someone in the know to fish with you, spend a day on the water, and try and learn from them. I'm very hesitant when I see what seems to be blatant "info-fishing".

this, of course, is my o p i n i o n. no harm or offense inteded. I hope you get into some fish

ok, as far as getting together with somebody that is "in the know" would be great, but i have to work 2 jobs. so just saying hey lets go this day or this day doesnt work out because my one job is 4days on 4 days off, and 9 times out of 10, im working those 4 days. if i get the chance to come up, its a spur of the moment thing so thats pretty much out of the question. i'd love to be taught by somebody that knows how to read the water and could teach me how to flyfish for steelies, what im feeling for in my drift, how to tell a light bite from the bottom, and so on, but its just not that easy on this end.

newbie, congrats, you had a better day then i had, i got skunked in the lfz, got fed up , used every color egg pattern i had, and used all the stone flies i had in my box, with no luck, after seeing fish rise in the same spot i was fishing all day.

We just got lucky I guess! We knew some good spots on the river from Salmon season and went with them...I usually head up Sundays, if you are ever up there, let me know!
Good luck!

HF, don't sweat this. A lot of guys are in exactly your situation. The first few times flailing around on the river convinced me the only way to shorten the learning curve you describe was to book a charter. Now I make a point of hiring a guide maybe two or three times a year, and have found it to be a great way to learn all that I can about the river and fishing it. In peak season you need to book this sometimes months in advance, but in off-peak times (like the next few months) you can probably get a guide on very short notice if need be. I go on single day "suicide runs" several times a year as well, and when out by myself or with friends, I find that the time spent with the guides really help me make the most of my other times on the water.

Where are you on the job?
