Hey everyone - I'm thinking of heading up to the salmon river this Sat., but have never been before. I'm taking a few friends up and hope to put them on a few fish (salmon/trout) - I'm more of a troller myself, but they're river guys. We're all catch and release, and will be travelling from 2 1/2+ hrs away so I'm hoping for some advice to hopefully avoid a skunk. Any thoughts on location (not too crowded, but good places - we don't mind bumping a few elbows, we're friendly), set-ups, bait/lures, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. Not looking for anyone to give up any super secret techniques/locations, but thought I'd ask - maybe some day I can return the favor. Thanks in advance! :)

There are a few nice fish still in the river, The guys have been doing better in **** creek and ******* for the few remaining salmon. You just have to be selective about what you go after. There were some nice steelhead and browns caught out of the schoolhouse area last night.
Good luck with your weekend.

I am heading up saturday also.
I am after trout not targeting the Salmon, but I sure won't drift away from them.
The water will still be at 1500 - tougher fishing for sure. many fish will be hugging the banks.. Explain that to your bussies if it is theiur first time.
What type of fishing will you do doing - spin, fly??
Hot Color for estaz flies has been pink. Egg sacs - blue - according to reports I've heard.
If you are not sure of basic setups, chime back in and we will help you further.
Good luck.

GOINHUNGRY,
You and your buddies shouldn't have a problem finding fish..My buddy and I fished all up and down the river on sunday and we got fish in every spot. We were looking for trout, but we mostly got kings, a few fresh ones too.I'm not complaining it's a little early to be targeting trout anyway. We got fish out of the hard water (fast riffles) as well as the slower current breaks. Most fish were caught on big stonefly patterns and red egg patterns.Anyway, there is plenty of kings and cohos around to play with and we even found a few steelhead that wanted to play but didn't want to be landed in 1500 cfs + ...Good luck

Thanks everyone, this is a huge help. No, I'm not sure of setups and tackle bait. I used to do alot of river fishing a few years back, but never hit the Salmon R. - I've fished catherine creek with egg sacks on fly rod/spinning reel setups. Is there something better we should be looking at? Being that we'll probably only be up once a year, we won't invest a ton in gear, but being fishermen, we simply can't resist picking up a bunch of tackle, bait, etc. on the way up, so any advice would be a huge help. I'll make a list from your suggestions, and see if we can pick up/try some of the stuff Saturday. I've never been up before, but have stopped at fat nancy's on my way up to black lake in the past, so we'll probably stop there for our tackle and any last-minute advice. Thanks to all, we'll keep you posted!!!
