Gamakatsu glo bug size 8-10 for salmon, Daiichi 10-12 for steel and 4-6 for swinging wets. Yes their more $$ but they are really sharp , strong and stay sharp without touching up all the time.

This season I have tried a new hook. The Tiemco SP107. It's 1X heavy with a 1X wide gap nymph hook. I have hooked and landed multiple species on sizes 6 through 12. Including several large and fresh mud sharks. I must say I am impressed, and plan to buy more for future tying.

P.S. For Egg Flies I use the Tiemco 105, also a most impressive hook. Very sharp, and very strong. I will even use larger sizes for tying Clousers out in the Lake Erie Tribs. Have to avoid those stainless saltwater hooks for the trout. Very bad if you break one off.

Don't take this the wrong way guys, but I can usually tell if the guy is from PA just by the hooks he uses. Usually a HEAVY wire 2" shank Mustad hook. I know you don't all fish like that, but honestly if I had a dollar for every time i have said that and the guy goes, "Yeah im from PA how did you know?" On a more serious note, I like the Blackbird Hooks. They are chemically sharpened needle points in 25pk. I have tied about 1700 flies for the fall with them. In the past 2 seasons i have only had 2 bend & 3 break. Not bad for size 10 & 12 hooks. Much less expensive that some others mentioned yet VERY sharp.

Red Mustads...not my first choice but I have a bunch I carry if I run out of my Blackbird or Ravens. Never really had a problem with the red Mustads, Happy...maybe you got a bad batch? One hook I do stay away from is Kamasan (sp?). I have had many break or straighten out even on small 4 to 6 pound steelies. Now, if you guys really want a strong hook, I have giant tuna hooks from 8/0 up to 12/0 and shark hooks even larger. LOL

I'm the same as ChaChing, Mustad 3906B #8 mostly. I'm gonna try the Cabelas model#30 #8 this year. I tied up some nymphs this year for trout season and liked them. They are lil more expensive than Mustads but they way cheaper than the fancy names and they are chemically sharpened too.

Hey Snagger, where can I find blackbirds??

Now now Metal,, it's one thing to bust a guy about his drinking habit like I did, but to lay into him about his hookup methods - now that's hitting low!!!

Hook selection is based on the fly pattern I am tying or insect I am imitating. Mustad hooks all the way, but this is nto to say that the other brands are not good..

FWIW: Norwegian tempering (softer) and Japanese tempering (much harder) are different. You can land a fish on a bent hook but not a broken hook. Also, if a hook breaks, it's usually operator error-either asking the hook to do the wrong job (land a 25# salmon on a #14 hook with heany tippet for example) or the hook got damaged. ALL hooks will dull on rocks, no matter how sharp they are out of the box. All premium hooks are chemically sharpened. You get what you pay for...but I've landed thousands of fish on Classic Mustad hooks and will continue to do so.

Like most manufactured products, you will get bad lots of hooks from time-to-time.
