I know for one that decaying salmon in the river provide a tremendous ammount of nutrients to the aqautic insect live in the river, not t mention small fishes. I know crafish for one will feed on carcases of salmon. And the small fish, minnows chubs ect will feed on pieces of flesh floating in the current.

If you see lots of dead salmon this time of year and a bit later you will also see lots and lots of maggots. Gross I know, but sometimes fish in the river key in on abundant sources of specific insect larve. In short if you have anything that looks like a maggot, small pale scud, during these times of the year, they sometimes prevail over other patterns. It may be coinsidence but there are sooo many somtimes that I think the fish actually key in on them.

Wooley - I saw ashow last year on the national geographic channel on a river on the west coast of Canada (cant seem to remember the name of the river) and the salmon run. They stated that they took samples of pine needles from well over 100 foot up the trees that lined the banks of the river and they found salmon dna in them. I was amazed!!!

Another good thing about rotting salmon, as 100$bill stated, the magots. Try fishing them under a float when all the salmon are piling up on the banks ;) .
