View Full Version : Lead in NYS

That slinkie thread got me thinking. I assume NYS is heading towards banning lead use alltogether. Once this happens, How do you think this will affect centerpin fishing. Shot patterns ect? I would think the steel shot will not present the bait as effective because of density, and shinyness. Any thoughts?

Cray I have boxes and boxes full of lead shot I bought last year... You are right, that imitation lead stuff is sheet.

If they ban its use in NY - what are you gonna do?

I can melt my lead down into a statue of the Happy Salmon, or I can be illegal and keep using it... Guess I will have to drink a few Natty's and ponder that fer awhile...

Unless the DEC officers are going to start carrying magnets in there pockets I'm sure most will keep on using it...

Already has non lead shot out.Its green in color, and is in egg shot form.I bought some to try out this summer to find out what size adjustments are needed to be made using this non lead shot. But going to hold off on using it until the next white water release for the 'yakers.Only because those are close to the flows you'd find during the winter on the SR.I'll try to let you all know how it goes. But its probably going to be sooner than later when NY state bans the use of lead shot al together.

Would someone explain to me how they would go about policing a lead shot ban? That would be extremely interesting. :)

It would be impossible, thats like saying that nobody can use monofilament anymore and trying to stop it. Fishing line does more to birds than lead. I agree they should at least limit the amount being used on certain areas where diving birds inhabit or feed. I dont know if anyone else has noticed, ducks and geese #'s are increasing to the point where they are a major problem.

I think the initial lead shot ban is more of a 'feel-good' law than something of substance.

It's going to be like the airport!! You'll have to walk through a lead detector before you can hit the stream. You'll have to take off your boots as well to prove there aren't any in them. All your gear gets put on the conveyor to get scanned also.

If they find lead on you, it can be mailed back to your home as long as it's legal in your state. :p

The undercover agents will have a special lead detector wand for streamside cavity searches.

If the DEC can't even keep a handle on guys keeping foul-hooked fish...and I won't even get in to them "trying" to police fishing "methods"...there is no reasonable way they could police "lead" effectively. The only thing that would be remotely possible is "random searches" on the water. And we all know that won't fly.

The idea behind the lead ban is the sale of it in NY to decrease it's usage (and effects) on the habitat and wildlife. With that said, I (along with many others) have found an outside sources (kind of like the "Lead Underground" if you will). That replacement stuff is crap as far as I've seen and costs an arm and a leg. When fishing the Ballpark last season, a friend and I were surrounded by guys using it. Take a wild guess how much of that junk they were using to "get to the bottom"...looked like 6 or 7 size 2's on there.

We were using lead and had 1-#5 and 1-#7 and that was it (the river was running around 475 cfs). Not only did we hammer the fish, but had very few fish get foul-hooked...yes, it happens to everyone when the fish get stacked. Nearly every other fish we saw hooked (and landed) that day were foul-hooked. This in part (I think) was due to the increased drag and poor drift qualities of that tin junk...guys were simply getting desperate and doing whatever it took to hook fish. Not to mention many constantly loosing a quarter of a bag when they got hung-up. I don't recall seeing many of them get their terminal gear back once they got snagged, either.

Now, when you consider that two of us fished the same area for 2-1/2 days and went through about (10) shot a piece, as opposed to bags full of the other stuff like most guys, I say I'll find a way to fish flies or eggs with the lead. You loose far less terminal gear, especially line, and the fish are more inclined to take an offering that isn't being presented with "chrome cannonballs".

The push is on with us to go to an even more traditional approach to fish the SR with specialty sink-tip lines and almost no shot at all. But fly fishing isn't everybody's bag (and the SR, or NY waters, shouldn't be made as such). So for those that can still get their hands on lead shot (or bismuth like duck hunters) I say use what works best for your type of fishing. Your damned if you do and damned if you don't...I'll use the lead until they invoke the "Assume the position law" on it.

I'll be bringing a weight set up to the clambake I tried and loved last year. Very similar to the Toobiez product. Just a bit bigger and geared more towards the Salmon river. I didn't lose 1 weight for over 3 days. It's a bit expensive, but since I'm not losing weight as often, it's worth it to me in the long run.

LONG LIVE LEAD!!!!!!!!!That is awesome cray!!!! i have tons of the stuff!!!! they can pry the lead out of my cold dead hands!!!!! like lil said, there is no way they can police it. all they can do is stop selling it! i mold my own weights and jigs, i get my lead from a buddy at the local tire shop. did you ever see the wheel weights to balance your tires. if you ever need lead, check out your local garage or go to the junkyard. you will have more than enough lead for a lifetime to make your own splitshot!:D

JStreamside
07-26-2005, 09:18 PM
Hey boys (and girls) make sure to take extra precautions when smolting your own weights. Wear a respirator mask (and make sure its a good one) and try to do it where it's extremely well ventilated.

There are a couple of older guys around here that will vouch for what smolting your own sinkers and jigs out of tire weights can do to you. Both are now in a losing battle with cancer and each case was directly linked to overly high levels of lead in their blood. One guy did it as part of his tackle shop...the other made just enough "stuff" for himself and 4 or 5 friends. Way too high a "price-tag" for me to even consider trying the process.

As far as I know, you can use lead if you have it. Just can't buy it anymore. I bought a small bag of that substitue junk this year and it SUX A$$ !!! I'll dig through my old piles of fishing gear to find every nugget of lead I can find, I am NOT using that substitue crap. I bought a bag of lead sinkers at Fat Nancy's about 3 years ago, and I still have some left (thank the fishing gods for that):D

Speaking of using wheel weights to make split shot, we used to make those big ones for the Oswego back during my days fishing off the "wall". The only problem is, that lead is pretty hard and needle nose pliers were needed to crimp the shot to the line.................I bet the first to police the "no lead use" would have to be the DSR! I can see it now....."OK boys, everybody out of the car and show us all of your gear.....and BTW take any wheel weights off you wheels just in case you're going to try and make lead in the lot...........if we catch you, you will be banned for life!.......Oh, and that will be $25! :D

SFan...no worries on the lead "supply". I have a brother-in-law that lives in CT and whenever I need lead I just have it shipped to his house from Cabela's. I have the attached "note" simply read...Merry Christmas! No fuss...no questions asked...then when he visits, they just bring it with them. I think my last "order" a year ago weighed something like 14 lbs. GOT LEAD???

Oh, though it's not through the PM...(SFan) this coming weekend is still uncertain as I'm currently on the "DL"...blew something out in my right leg/knee on Saturday that still hurts like hell. Been doing the ice / heat thing on and off for 3-days and haven't made much progress. On the other hand, I could just sit on the bank and "coach" while you fish. I'll know more by this time tomorrow...going to do a straight 12-hours ice and heat pack to see if that improves things.

Turns out he's got a torn meniscus and a bakers cyst resulting from the tear. Huh? When did it become a crime to use lead? If it ever becomes illegal to use in NY I would rank that law right up there with it being illegal to tear a tag off a mattress. There are far more important issues that need to be policed by fishermen/women than the use of lead split shot

When it becomes illegal to USE lead in NYS (as with lead-shot for duck hunting), then I won't use it any longer. But as long as people can get it for me (or to me) from other sources outside NY...well, the other option is hogging half a run on the river to fish it properly with traditional fly gear. NOT!!!...won't happen on the SR. If lead does get banned for usage, I'll just make slinkies out of bismuth shot.

As for the knee blow out One...mine was no where near as severe. Just the inside of the thigh above the knee...kind of like an inner hamstring. Still hurts a bunch, but the icy / hot and leg wrap have helped somewhat. If it doesn't improve by this time next week, I'll be back to see the medicine man...just have to take it easy. Even if I have to gimp my way along the SR and out to Erie, I'm goin'!!!

Cray referred to me as "shorty" so he can carry my a$$ if needs be...ever see those backpacks for kids...well, I'm ridin' shotgun!!! I'll just have to duck when I see the pink worm comin' at my head doing 500 miles an hour!! But, it will be a win / win situation for him 'cause I can let him know when the fat chicks are movin' in to ambush him over that bumper sticker of his!!! OK...wait a second...let's get this out of the gutter SF

First and foremost, NONE of the my own custom fly rods get used as a walking stick...I'll use the one you got from me!!!

Next...I've seen pics of RB in the photo gallery and any woman that looks that good in waders in the dead of winter is most certainly a "hottie" to me!!! And I'm with Val on the "porno" thing...I got this going in the wrong direction when I busted on Cray. SOOOO...what did I miss???

And last, but not least, I'll GIMP my way around the SR, area tribs and Erie because I simply enjoy fishing for the big boys (& girls) that much. Rest assured that the river "Pimpin'" is best left in the hands of the "experts" that have already been deemed as such and have total claim to that enterprise.  I'll just be happy to be on the water for another season at this point in time.

Now, if all will excuse me, I've got to go pick-up my new pair of "Pink River Crutches"...gotta make sure everyone can see me gimpin' behind Cray while clearin' the SR of 200-pounders!!! :D

(Hope nobody is offended by all of this, but when you're hurtin' and down a bit stuff like this helps with the healing).

Cool...the easiest way I've found to get lead is just order it from Cabela's (for example) and have it shipped to a bud from the site that doesn't live in NY. Just have a message with it...like Enjoy the Water or Happy B-Day and the person taking the order doesn't get suspicious. Well, at least not so much until you order 14 lbs at once like I did.

Even with the shipping it cheaper than all the money in gas you'd spend hopping state lines. Just have your bud bring it with them when you fish together. No fuss...no muss...got lead. The only down side to the process is I tried to place the order on-line and the computer system wouldn't let me do it due to the restrictions for sale to NY residents. You'll have to call the order in to a rep directly.
