I was hoping somebody could explain to me the process of making a slinky using nylon cord. And what size split shot would you use when you make it

Use Lead shot from shot gun reloading not split shot. I think they use size "B" or "BB".

Using parachute cord you can get at an army surplus store for very little money.I make mine with the balls they use for slingshots.I got them at walmart and I think they come in diffferent sizes too.

Cut a piece of cord and burn on end with a candle or lighter.Close that end with pair of needle nose. Now depending how much shot you want in the cord determines its length.Just make sure you leave enough room after inserting the last shot to burn that end and close it up.With the amount of shot that comes in those boxes and the amount of cord you get you could make enough for a season or two.You would make them with different #'s of shot of course depending on water conditions.

Thanks, next question: How would you attach the swivel? Melt the cord around it?

Man I found what you are looking for. This has some great pictures on how to make them and rig them!

I am not sure where this guys is from but you can't really use sliding slinkies. So just tie your main line and leader to the same hole in the swivle. I hope that helps!!

I used slinkies about 7 years back. They can stay on all day in some situations but will break off in others. I still got some in my bag but haven't used them. Besides the cost (at least the way I rigged them) wasn't cheap. I feel that it takes too long to re-rig and now, I just crimp the split shot on the main line tag end. The way to do it is to buy some 3 way swivels; tie your main line to one eye, your tippet to another eye and a snap clip (hooked to slinkie, with swivel if possible) to the third eye. This works well and will not cause line twist but there is alot of hardware involved and may cut down on strikes. If your talking Salmon who cares - there will be so many of those in the river this fall that, I'm sure you will hook more than your fare share :D .

cray, don't take this the wrong way cuz i still use lead splits even though i bought lead-free stuff 2 years ago. BTW, twice the cost and half the weight!!
what i don't understand is the fact the NYS barred the sale of lead but doesn't enforce the use of it. i guess cleaning the waters has to start somewhere.

What am I supposed to take wrong?? I am the Pirate of lead man! I live in PA, anyone in NY need lead??? LOL!! I will use it untill they ban it. The other stuff sucks and that is it. All I was doing was telling the guy the truth. They use lead Shotgunshot in them. I watched them at whitaker making them on time and all they did was pour the shot right out of the gunning bag in to a plastic bowl.

No hard feelings here man! :D

Thanks for the info guys. I know how stupid its is NY banning the sale of lead but you can still use it. I can drive across the border and buy fireworks in New Hampshire only because I am a Mass resident, but they are illegal to use in New Hampshire or Mass. Go figure that one out. Lead isnt outlawed yet because I dont see any conceivable way they can enforce it. What are they going to do next, outlaw lead for downriggers too? Too many bird loving lobbyers whispering in ears and lining pockets in Albany

FYI- the pic of the slinky rigged with the fly looks illegal because the slinky can slide up the line past the 4'-0" max distance between weight and fly.

Maybe there is a swivel or knot to prevent this that's out of the picture.

Nope you are right man that is illegal. That one will slide up and down the line. Click on the link and he says that. But that is why I said to tie the leader and the mainline to the one eye on the swivle to use it here! ;) That was the best picture I could find.

Oops!! Sorry bud. I should have read your post bit more closely and checked the link.

Didn't mean to be redundant.

Any particular size on the parachute cord. I was going to make a few up for the season. I got a bunch of non-removable splitshot as a gift once, don't like using it, don't want to waste it.

Question:
I don't know the exact wording of the leader law BUT: My assumption is that the leader is considered the distance between the swivel and the hook or fly. If that is the case how can a sliding slinkie be illegal??? While the slinkie does slide it does not physically change the measurement of distance between the swivel and hook in which the reg is referring too??????

Can anyone clarify that?

I believe it's the hook to the added weight.I don't have a book in front of me.:o

max distance between weight and fly is 4'-0"

Makes sense, that's why a lot of guys add weight to the tag end of the leader or main line off the swivel. Like Cray said (I think) I tie both main line and leader to singe eye of swivel and attach slinkie there.

I tie both main line and leader to single eye of swivel and attach slinkie there.

Never saw or used that before.
Suppose you are using a real small swivel - you may not have enough eye to get both lines through???

Another thing I must ask - would'nt that practice possibly make a messy lump of knots prone to weakness/breakage?

I must admit - I get awfully confused by some of the rigging stuff being offered up lately.

I don't use slinkies,,, I just add my shot to the tag end of the leader...

I employ the KISS principle - because I am.:o

Not really recommended for chuck and duck, or traditional fly fishing, but suit yourself ... Recipe: fill a length of hollow nylon hockey skate laces or parachute cord ... camo or dark colors ... with #4 (4-0 ??) lead buckshot ... in several sizes (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. shot per slinky) to get it down and keep it down in various flow conditions, cut to length and heat seal (lighted candle, gas pliers ... I like to mold them to a point on each end, who knows why?) attach to main line with #10 black or olive snap swivel ... attach leader (up to 4' long) and fly (egg sack, jig, worm, G-man's M-80, etc.) to slinkly swivel with another #10 snap swivel ... That's it ... replace any or all of the above as necessary (snags, rocks, trees, breakoffs, nicked fluorocarbon, step on leader to shorten as DEC folks approach, etc.) ... I really prefer the split shot on the tag end of the leader approach with the flyrod, but usually go the slinky route with the spin rod ... Go fish ... TNX Cliff
