Personally I prefer Steelies for their acrobatics, or any Bows. But I can't wait till Sept. for Salmon cuz I can't get back up there till then :( And they were fun, I never had a fish slap me in the legs before LOL :D

I love the chrome as much as the next guy... but nothing beats a 30# king on 12# line on the SR.

September is coming quick... but not quick enough.

This little(true) story is for YOU ,the Happy Salmon---because it's clear you love them shark devils

In 1997 or 1998 ,I took a Delaware Bay,salt water fishing buddy up to Pulaski;it was his first time fishing up there and he had never caught anything bigger in the fresh water than a 14" put and take bucket trout.

We were fishing just above Douglaston and he hooked into a really big salmon on his flyrod.Surprise:He actually managed to catch up to the shark. His reel was a Valentine that boasted of a "planetary " drag system(i.e. only the little crank handle turns when the fish takes line).

That little crank handle turned so fast and hard with that monster on ,that when he came back upstream to rightfully boast of his prize catch to me ,his knuckles were seriously dripping blood. He was so pumped up from that fish--he didn't feel his knuckles being frayed to the bone.!!!!

THAT POWER---that's what I love about those fish..... :D

Hey HS,

I'm going out into my yard with my rod and my quad. I tie the end to a tree and hold the rod and take off. YOu can't get enough of hearing the drag go... You think thats a bit crazy.....

Do any of you guys hit the lake and troll for salmon in the summer? We start picking up the coho's here in the lake in Feb. through til May and then the kings from June until Sept. in the lake before they move into the rivers. If any of you ever have a chance to make it up to the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste. Marie in July I highly recommend it. I would take a 10 lb. atlantic over a 20 lb. king any day. Nothing like seeing a fish come 8 ft. out of the water when it picks up your fly. Here's a pic. from one of my morning trips on Michigan. We ended up with 165 kings from July 4 to Aug. 30. Of course we didn't keep them all.

I've beenr reading a lot about the fishing in Michigan...Is it the Manistee or something that's supposed to be pretty hot as well??? I've been thinking about taking a trip out there next year for summer Steelies......is it as good as they say it is?
Also if anyone who wasn't fishing watched OLN "Fly Fishing America" the other morning you saw Matt Supinski fishing Michigan waters....He's the author of Steelhead Dreams...a must read.

The Manistee is one of the best Lake Michigan tribs in Michigan. I would suggest looking into the Pere Marquette, Manistee, and Muskegon if you're going to make a trip out. If you're looking for summer steelhead (aka Skamania) you'll have to do some research first. They're a stocked fish, but if you can find them it's worth it.

Would you recommend a summer trip for Skamania or a fall/winter for Steelhead? It seemed like the summer run was much better than it is here on the Salmon River. I was fingering the summer run just as a change of pace when waters around here become too warm for Trout.

For quantity I would suggest the fall, but for big fish I would tell you summer. Our fall run seems like it's getting bigger and bigger each year. Not so much on the Superior tribs, but on the Michigan tribs it seems that way. I have never tried looking for a guide for summer steelhead, but I would tell you to look into that as well. Some of the larger waters are only really accessible by drift boat.
