Now that I have your attention...
My wife wants to take me to Alaska next summer around the 3rd week in July for my next significant birthday. I have have never been there. Does anyone have any recommendations on fish camps/lodges etc.? Not looking to break the bank on a full blown week of fishing, I would also like suggestions on where to go/stay for sight seeing. I am planning on taking a 6 weight and an 8 weight and hopefully one of my pins if I can figure out how to carry/ship it. Is it possible to fish on my own or is it necessary to hire guides? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wow,,,,,,,yur lucky, I dunno anything about Alaska, but know that would be my dream vacation. I'd try ta hit salmon, trout and some Cod,,,,and check out the glaciers. Take pics! Val I do have one friend online that goes there every yr, stays at a nice lodge, I'll ask him where he stays once he gets back from Fla, if ya want. I'll just post it, or I'll PM ya his email address.

if you go to the most popular rivers at the height of the runs (June-July), you may very well run into the hordes of fishermen that one would encounter on a mid-October day on the SR..
Personally, I would be bummed if I dropped that much $$ and encountered that. The advantage of a lodge like the one Lil gave u a link to is that they have their preferred waters and will fly you in to remore stretches of river - but of course you are going to pay for that.
I know a guy that went there last year and rented a van in Anchorage and went out on his own for 10 days...I don't know if you prefer to stay in one camp and have them cater to you - or prefer a more independent style of vacation where you go where/when u please.
If you are interested in more info, PM me and I will try to put you in touch with this guy..

I have been 4 times in the last 20 years. All the access points that you can fish on your own will be heavy with fishermen. Even the guides and lodges that don't fly you out must engage in "combat fishing". There is even a "world class" lodge that has you fishing across stream from a state park! E-mail me and I will give you a good spot, crowded, but if the run is on, you will catch all the salmon you want. lpecoraro@comcast.net.

i lived in fairbanks ak for 4 years, i did alot of fishing in that time some with a guide most with out. if you want to fish, rent an rv for a week, get a map and have fun. you've got from now till july to plan it out. if that's not an option the get a guide or room at a lodge. but i'll warn ya they ain't chep. i've been places where ya could walk a cross the river an the backs of salmon and never touch bottom. :D if ya need more info my wife's a travel agent. you can e-mail her at lisabd@westelcom.com she can mail ya info if ya like. :)
