hey everyone...hope the fishing is going well...i just had a quick question about putting on a replacement rod tip. I bought a rod last nite at Cabela's in the bargain cave that was broke off right below the rod tip (I measured it against the exact same rod in perfect condition). I bought a rod tip to put on but want to do it correctly. I have done it before on my spinning rods as a quick job...some epoxy or crazy glue. I would like to make sure that it is fixed correctly. Any help would be appreciated. :D ...if anyone goes up to the finger lakes region fishing let me know. I have been catching some landlocks and browns, good sized. I saw some lakers caught and a 12 lb. brown too. Tight lines.

I have built a couple of rods now along with fixing a few. I use 5 min epoxy. Place a small amount of epoxy on the tip and spread the length of the tip to be covered by the new tip top. When you slide the new tip top on, twist it on so the epoxy spreads evenly. Make sure you clean up any excess epoxy and also make sure you align the tip top with the rest of the eyes. Finally let harden overnight to allow a good bond. I hope this helps.

Hi 1st Time,
I use the tip top adhesive that you heat up with a flame. First carve of a little sliver with a pocket knife and slide it up into the tip top, then heat the bar of adhesive with a lighter flame or denatured alcohol lamp to get it gooey, rub the gooey part on the tip of the rod so it sticks to where the tip top will go, and then heat the tip top itself to melt the sliver inside it, and slide the tip top onto the rod tip. As 'Lil said, epoxy will work too, but if you just break the tip top guide itself, or lose the ring in it, you'll have a heck of a time getting it off. You might have to break the rod at the bottom end of the tip top guide. Using the tip top adhesive, you can just put flame to it to get it off. Hope this helps.

Hell yeah Lil'. The stuff is pretty strong, and most folks that I know use it just for that reason of being able to get the tip top off again if you need to. I'm not going to say that I've never seen a tip top come off a rod tip before, but if it does, it probably wasn't put on right to begin with. Luckily, I've never had one come off yet on any rods that I've built.

So you never epoxy your top top on?

Hey guys, thanks for the help...I went to Cabela's about an hour ago, and put the rod tip on as soon as I got home. Finman, tip top adhesive works great. That stuff is incredible. I would recommend it to anyone that needs to replace a rod tip. Thanks again, maybe Ill see some of you guys on the river on Monday. Me and a friend are heading up for the day. Tight lines
