View Full Version : Rigging question for steelhead fishing all next week 26-31.

Been going to the salmon river for last 13 years and have never caught any steelhead.i just usally fish with salmon eggs at the dsr. can anyone out there give me some pointers on where to go, the right spread from sinkers to bait. whatever might be able to help me out.

13 YEARS and no steel??? Here's how I do it. I use just enough weight to tick bottom (try half or less of what others are using). : ) I place my weight between 2 and 3 feet from my eggs. If I am fishing a deep(more than like 3-4 feet), dark pool, I will usually tie on a float (great for strike detection). I also use a flourocarbon leader between 6 and 10 lb test. I am in the same boat!!! I have been fishing the Salmon for years and never caught any steel!!! Had my share on but I must have a curse or something!!! I catch quite a few on other streams but not there??? Go figure. I am trying to have carpy take me and show me how it is done. I am now in to float fishing as you know and would love to catch my firts Salmon river steelie on the float rod!!! Any tips for a guy with a curse from anyone of the seasoned Salmon river steelheaders???

Carpy, sorry man still workin weekends:(!!! Am going up towards the Oak on Tuesday, not sure if I am fishing there or nearby with the rain that is predicted!!! Let me know how you guys make out up there this weekend and the crowds.

I usually start the morning using eggs orange colored sacs produce the best for me, right now i'd run a 10lb main line w/a 6-8 lb leader,size 12 or 14 barrel swivel,run a 2-3" piece of mono w/your split shot on that "snags less",then a 4' leader,,if you dont get nothing on eggs switch over to flies,i like using nymph patterns in dark colors,my favs are blue/purple black/blue,black/gold,balck/red, i use brighter colors once in awhile but i stick to what works for me...good luck to ya>))>

probally be at the dsr monday morning thru thrusday if the fishings good.be wearing either red detriot red wings hat or a blue adais.
