Guide service....best time on the river?

This past weekend was my first time fishing for Salmon. I was on the Salmon river Oct. 3-4th. Not knowing what to expect, our guide told us this is the worst season he has seen yet as far as the salmon runs go.

Is better to say that no one knows when the salmon are going to run? Is it better at the end of the month of October or the beginning? I'm seeing a lot of positive posts about this past weekend.

last year a friend came up and landed around 30 fish a day. I caught one this past weekend.

I just want to know if my guide was just trying to fill his early season spots, or if it is just unpredictable.

I would have to disagree. I by no means am a guide, but I have been fishing the Salmon River for salmon for 11 years know. I have seen slow seasons and I have seen good seasons. I would have to chalk this season so far as quite good. Last year was also quite good. I personally have not had a day like I did this past Saturday since I started fishing the Pulaski area.

The salmon season is generally quite fluid. You can hit great days and bad days and everyone will tell you different reasons for why and when the salmon will run in big numbers. Last season their was a large run 2 weeks prior to the begininng of October. (which is generally very early) This season this past weekend and early week has been excellent. A good guide knows the river well and can get you into fish on even the slowest of days. Just remember don't always expect to have a day of non-stop, one after another action. Columbus day is smack dab right in the middle of the salmon spawning run..this is also why it is the most crowded week of the season. If you want to be safe a week before or after is a good rule of thumb, but sometimes you never know.

When all is said and done, I think this will be one of the better seasons in recent memory.

Who was your guide man??? This salmon season sounds normal. I am fairly new at this and I have put one and one together and like lil said sounds like a normal season. Nothing crazy about it but the people.
