Thanks for the help..

I usually use real, cured salmon eggs, or skein. Both are kinda messy to tie into bags, but I've had luck with em, so to me its worth the time and mess.

I heard that Brown Trout eggs are even better then Salmon eggs for Steel.
How do you cure eggs to get them ready. I heard guys say they soak them in salt or borax... Not sure.
Can u fill us in on your process?
I would like to get a Brown and tie up some sacs...

Carpman just told me to put them in a mason jar and sprinkle salt on them then freeze them. I will tell you in the next couple weeks if that works. I will be tying them up then!

If I am tying sacks, I personally prefer my eggs to have a tight, full membrane. I think the hold up a little better and send out scent just fine without leaving your bait covered in empty egg membranes. I found a product called eg-cure that works very well for this purpose. Unfortunately, I can't find anyplace in Rochester that sells it. I got mine at Hesselson's in Elmira. If I am fishing skein (which I have been lately) I prefer to use Pro-Cure, or a similar product, and dry my skeins out. It helps if ya cut em up befor ya dry them. I like them a have a consistency a little like gummy bears. I think this helps em stay on the hook.

Has anyone ever added those little colored styroform balls to help float there sacks a little better??? I guessing it might help while bouncing off the bottom a little better . :?: Just want to see what you guys thought of them and if anyone ever used them.

Fishless...Ok heres my deal with sacs. I tied all my own sacs this weekend with BEAUTIFUL results. I actually cheated a little. All Seasons or any of the sport shops in town are selling a mason jar size bottle of plain cured eggs for about $4.50. I got roughly 80 to 90 sacs out of that one bottle. You figure they sell them by the dozen for $3.75. Your making out real well. I used 'spider line' to tie with. Basically my proces went as follows.
1. Lay out a few colored spawn net squares.
2. Place roughly 8 eggs in middle of each spawn net.
3. Grab all corners of netting with you index and forefinger.
4. Take spider line and place under your forefinger.
5. Wrap quickly while pulling continously on the spider line.
6. Pull to snap off after about 7 turns.
8. Trim excess off BUT NOT TOO CLOSE. (I made that mistake with my first batch and as soon as they hit the water the sac fell apart.)
P.S. The styrofoam balls are to make what they call floaters. They generally use them in the estuary and when water is high for steelies. For kings they will float too high and will not be down near the fish.
P.S.S. I went to Pius X in Roseto, PA way back in my high school years.

I'm not sure of the proper process, the important issue is to make enough for your friends. (HA HA T.K.)

I generally use Mustad Freshwater size 4's or 6's. And for steelhead Mustad steelhead hooks.

OK..
Get yourself some brown trout eggs, put them in sme spaghetti sauce jars, cover with enough water to come to the top of the eggs and freeze them.
I rarely cure my eggs anymore. I have used both uncured brown and steely eggs and the brown eggs hold up much better.
If i do cure them i put them in a jar(i always just use spagetti sauce) add enough water to come to the top of the eggs. Then pour in a decent amount of salt. I just eyeball it, but i'd say about half a 1/4 cup. Stir it up, add more water to come to the top of the eggs then let sit in the fridge over night. Then freeze

Micro-wave them  ,,just take out what you need,i like tying sacs with fresh eggs,3-4eggs per sac works great for me.Last year i used shrimp sacs,i bought a 1/2 lb cooked shrimp from the food place in pulaski, ate some w/****tail sauce and cut small pieces of shrimp and tyed sacs with them.,worked great i caught a 35"16lb. within 15 minutes of fishing, then i got a brown about 22",better yet one shrimp sac lasted 3 hours..>))>

I too will throw some shrimp in the sack.
You can get a six ounce can (USUALY near the tuna fish section)
of the tiny salad shrimp. As with this whole steelhead thing...
just when I think I'm starting to figure out the game... ya know having a good day catching more than usual...BAM!!
what worked last week is now part of the list of things that arn't working today...
Stay focused on that drift
