I some sites I read where guys will tie a 6" to 1 foot lenght of 30 lb mono to their fly line, then continue on with leader material, then tippet.

Do any of you guys do this, and if so, what are the advantages ?

Seems like a bit of extra tying to me..

It depends on the leader you're using. Some say it helps the leader roll over and lay out nicer. I think it's a carry over from the old days when you would make your own leaders from spools of different pound test mono.

It is just a way to make a loop to tie your leader to your fly line. You tie it on with a nail knot and a surgeons loop. It is kind of like those Chinese finger torture things that you put on the end of your line.
