Estuary Begins To Harbor Residents Of The ‘Salmon’ Variety

After the confirmation of the new ‘residents’ of the Salmon River estuary last night the ‘interwebs’ have been abuzz with folks starting to get the itch in full gear. Briefly talked to ‘Snagger’ and ‘Duckmeat’ via text this afternoon and they again confrmed what we had all been reading. A rough count of 1000 to 1500 was everyone’s best guess thus far, but that is by no means scientific.

Checked in with the lower river and the DSR reported a few new pods coming up through but nothing major to write home about. My best guess is we are still a bit off from a major run but this is definetly the start of the 2009 season.

The lake is on fire as of late which can mean only one thing, they are beginning thier journey toward the mouth of the river. In the coming weeks the estuary will begin really loading up.

Their is a full gate (750 CFS) water release scheduled for this weekend which could also trigger some new action. I think we are all waiting patiently on that early coho run. The minute I hear word, so will all of you.

If you haven’t started tying those flies you better get crackin’ (myself included).

Keep it locked here for all of the latest reports and news for the upcoming season.
