It seems mother nature likes giggle or she has an odd sense of humor. Last year at this time the Pulaski area was in a major drought and the reservoir that pushes the flow of the Salmon River was but a mere puddle.
Well fast forward to 2008 and it’s like a complete 180 degree difference. Rain has been consistent all summer long which has help keep the reservoir completely full or darn near close to it. The base flow in the Salmon river has been maintained at 335CFS and many times throughout the summer a release of 750 to 1000 CFS was needed. Currently the river is running at a consistent 335CFS with a waterline update coming today.
If you missed my post last night we are looking at overnight temps in the lower 40s and even 30s for the next few days. All of the above combines for beautiful conditions for an early salmon run. I hear the whispers of “Build it and they will come.” Lets modify that, “Give us the right conditions and they will run!” and run they have. Anglers who have been heading north to Pulaski have been rewarded with slightly unpressured fish and beautiful weather. Nothing beats fishing for these trophy fish in great weather with little to no pressure. Those who have experienced it know exactly what I mean.
So let me paint the picture in your mind as you sit back at your computer monitor at work and at home. Because you yourself will be Salmon River bound soon. Seeing that exit for Pulaski, grabbing our needed gear at Fat Nancy’s, All Seasons or Whitakers in the wee hours of the morning will be like Christmas morning to us. ‘Us’ That ‘us’ only refers to one kind of fishermen… “The Crazies”… the salmon and steelhead fishing fanatics of SalmonCrazy. Once again our annual fishermen holiday is here.
Tight Lines Ladies and Gents. Enjoy the great season ahead and may your lines be tight and nets heavy.
